Hello All,

My 16 yr. old son has something called Osgood-Schlatter disease. It has bothered

him off and on for 2 yrs. now.

It has really started to act up again. He is on the Badminton team and Track

team at school. He lives and breaths sports. He is refusing to cut back as he

says he missed out on far to much last year because of it and resting the knee

really did not seem to help a lot. I have taken him to the doctor several times

and get the same answer... " Quit doing sports for a few months and take

Ibuprofen 3x daily to keep the swelling down " . Nothing more.

I am not comfortable with my son taking so much ibuprofen on such a regular

basis. He is taking more of a dose than recommended but Dr. said to because his

age and weight (150lbs.) can handle it.

I would so truly appreciate anyone's insight on alternative natural methods that

would help him. I am not looking for a magic cure just something to help with

the pain, swelling (inflammation) etc. I am open to anything: aromatherapy,

herbs etc.

Here is what I found on the web: http://familydoctor.org/135.xml

Says:

What is Osgood-Schlatter disease?

Osgood-Schlatter (say: " oz-good shlot-ter " ) disease is one of the most common

causes of knee pain in young athletes. It causes swelling, pain and tenderness

just below the knee, over the shin bone (also called the tibia). It occurs

mostly in boys who are having a growth spurt during their pre-teen or teenage

years. One or both knees may be affected.

How is Osgood-Schlatter disease treated?

Your doctor may tell your child to cut down on time spent playing until the pain

has been gone for 2 to 4 months. Your child may need to avoid any activity that

requires deep knee bending. Your child may also need to run at a slower speed or

for a shorter amount of time and jump less often.

Thanks in advance,

~Michelle~
