Guest guest
Hi everyone, Please help. One of my friend is expecting, and will be due in October. She would like to know more about midwife and doula. What is the different between the two? What is the average cost to have a midwife help deliever your baby? I would greatly appreciate any info you have on this. Thanks, Trang

Here doulas run $400-600, and homebirth midwives around $2400. The best place to find doulas is by internet search by area, or dona.org, cappa.org, birthworks.org You can find midwives by interent search location and midwiferytoday.org. The difference is that MW's are the primary caregiver and they perform clinical skills, fetal heart tones, internal exams, catch the baby etc... A doula does emotional and physical support, aromatherapy, massage, reassurance, suggestions to help labor along, etc...nothing clinical. HTH! Guest guest
Hi Trang, At the Women's Health Center I went to to have my baby, I had the choice of either having a midwife or an obstetrician work with me throughout my pregnancy and delivery. It wasn't any different cost wise to choose one over the other. I ended up with an emergency c-section, so I don't know what the average cost of having a normal delivery is. I am in Maine and it cost me about $15,000.00 I'm not familiar with the services a doula provides, but my midwife was wonderful and so were the other ones in this practice. I highly recommend one over an OB. Hope this helps a little, Chris - " trangnd " <trangnd Thursday, March 10, 2005 11:15 PM Need info on Midwife and Doula > > > Hi everyone, > > Please help. Guest guest
Hi Trang, A doula is there to assist the mother, but she's not really involved in any of the " medical " procedures, like actually delivering the baby and that kind of stuff. She is more there as a coach and a support .. and to do things like helping make mama as comfortable as possible. In a hospital setting she can help make sure that mama isn't bullied into doing things she doesn't want to do but is in too vulnerable a position to stand up for herself. A midwife is an actually baby deliverer. She gives mama prenatal check ups, delivers the baby and provides some after birth care and check ups. I had a " certified nurse midwife " deliver my first baby in a hospital setting and I had a friend who was a doula there also with me. For my homebirth I had what is called a " direct entry midwife " and didn't have a doula (I didn't really need the doula so much in the homebirth setting). If your friend is in the Houston area there is a she can join called Houston Home Birth Support http://health.HoustonHomeBirthSupport/ They have a lot of info available on midwives and doulas in the area *Smile* Chris (list mom) http://www.alittleolfactory.com trangnd [trangnd] Hi everyone, Please help. Guest guest
Oh yeah, Chris' post below reminded me that I forgot to mention costs .. as I recall a doula is usually a few hundred dollars (we have a few doulas here so maybe they can correct me if I'm wrong, my doula was a friend in training so she did it free as she was working to get more birth experiences). My " certified nurse midwife " through the ob/gyn office cost $100 - that was the total for all the co-pays and whole birth procedure, but if I had to pay out of pocket for the hospital birth it would have been about $15K or so, just like Chris mentions it being in Maine. My " direct entry midwife " cost about $3000 all total and my insurance ended up picking up 70% of that tab. I would definitely use a midwife again, and definitely go for the homebirth again! *Smile* Chris (list mom) http://www.alittleolfactory.com Chris McFadden [soapgirl] Hi Trang, At the Women's Health Center I went to to have my baby, I had the choice of either having a midwife or an obstetrician work with me throughout my pregnancy and delivery. Guest guest
Hi, Jo, Chris and Chris, thanks for the reply. I'll forward the info on. Curious now, how does the process work with having a midwife deliver your baby? Do we have a monthly check up with an ob/gyn but have a midwife deliver your baby? Or is the whole process from begin to end is with a midwife? Oh, she's in Kansas City. Thanks, Trang
Guest guest
Hi Trang, I saw a midwife from my very first pre-natal visit to the last day I stayed in the hospital. I won't to into my awful story, but after 32 hours of induced labor and multiple complications I ended up with an emergency c-section. Because of this I had to have an OB do the actual c-section and the midwife assisted with the surgery. A midwife can't do surgery at least here in Maine. I didn't end up with " my " midwife for the delivery as she was not on duty that night, but I had seen the other 3 midwives in the practice towards the end of the pregnancy so I could get to know each of them. Everything ended up fine in the end. Come to think of it I did have to consult with a high risk OB a couple of times because in my second tri-mester I had to have my gallbladder removed, so I saw the regular surgeon and the high risk OB for that. The midwives were wonderful. They were very open to alternative pain treatments instead of just pushing drugs on me and as a matter of fact I was going to have a water birth. Unfortunately that didn't work out either for me. They offered to diffuse appropriate essential oils for me and massage was also an option. I won't be having another baby (I had my one and only last January and I will be 40 next week) because of the complications and my age, but if I did I would definitely go with a midwife again, no question about it. Good luck to your friend, Chris - " trangnd " <trangnd Friday, March 11, 2005 5:12 PM Re: Need info on Midwife and Doula > > > Hi, > > Jo, Chris and Chris, thanks for the reply. Guest guest
Hello trangnd, In reference to your comment: è What is the average cost to have a midwife help è deliever your baby? Trang, There are people on the list more qualified than I to answer the other questions, but I can tell you that my midwife charges $1700, which counts normal labs, all visits, and the birth, but does not include " extra " labs which may be needed if indicated, ultrasound, hospital charges, etc. Keisha
