There is no new info here from the USDA .. its clear that they are using

terms (double speak) that even politicians sometimes misunderstand ..

basically ..

> Participation in Codex

> FDA participates in and exercises leadership in committees of the Codex

> Alimentarius Commission, through improved coordination of Codex activities

> within FDA and with other U.S. agencies, in order to elaborate and promote

I think the key words above are " while protecting national interests and

establish a basis to resolve food issues on sound scientific evidence in

an objective atmosphere " .. and .. " consistent with *** U.S. regulations

and laws. "

> FDA ensures that processes are in place to develop and articulate clear U.S.

U.S. delegation positions? Important this is .. and what are the U.S.

delegation positions? Odds are great they don't reflect those parroted

by the EU member states .. many good reasons exist for disagreement.

Again .. I say don't worry .. these organizations that are fighting

Codex exist only as long as they can strike fear into the hearts of

members .. and to do this they must use double talk to forewarn of

terrible things to come.

The U.S. government must participate in international trade .. must

promote mutual understanding .. but we will not allow the EU to dictate

terms .. that's been proven over and over again.

As for harmonization .. there will be/must be a certain amount of

standardization between trading partners .. but like the concept of

inter operability that NATO forces strove to achieve for most of my

lifetime .. it is not an easy thing to do .. likely will never happen.

There are profound differences between the way capitalist and social

democratic governments function .. from an economic and commercial point

of view these differences are as great as are the differences between

democratic and autocratic government styles.

I see nothing in the URL that should concern you .. if you see something

I missed .. please point it out.

Y'all keep smiling. :-) Butch http://www.AV-AT.com

PS: You want something REAL to be concerned about I'll give you a real

one. Due to legitimate transfer and high volume larceny of high

technology .. coupled with a highly educated, poorly paid work force ..

and a desire by Western companies to cash in on a great emerging market,

it looks like China will surpass Europe and the USA economically not

later than 2025.

Things that can stop (or slow) this from happening!

1. If China is more interested in what they claim to be National

Sovereignty/Territorial Integrity than they are economic growth ..

meaning .. their position on taking over Taiwan.

2. A tightening of control over technology transfer. We sell it too

damn cheap .. and in some cases we give it away.

3. The West must improve education in science, and the American

government must push harder on counterfeiting and violation of

Intellectual Property Rights.

Those who think this is no big deal haven't given it any deep thought.
