Sad Midwife Experience

Just wanted to share this with ya'll, mainly to get it off my chest with

someone who understands. DH does, but my moms just aren't getting it.

I'm pregnant with #4, due 10/1. Last week we went to interview a midwife-one

of two in my area. I LOVED her, all throughout the interview. She answered

my questions, was open to what I said, and then she said she uses EO's and

such as well. I was soooooooooo excited. We're getting ready to leave, and DH

has a hard time getting up cause he had pulled a muscle in his chest. The

midwife says " You should try some peppermint EO on that. " So I say " I hadn't

thought of that, I'll do some checking on that. " We're going out and she says

" Oh, I have some right here. " Grabs a bottle and drops it STRAIGHT in to his

hand. The quickest thing I could think of was " Rub it on your shirt " I asked

if

I could see the bottle and sure enough, Young Living. We smiled our way out

of her house, but I was in tears by the time we got to the car.

Living out in a rural area, our choices of who helps with the baby arrival

are slim. The other midwife I have never been able to get ahold of. She works

a regular 9-5 job, which I can understand, but if I can't get ahold of her

now, will I be able to when I'm in labor? There is an OB, but for one, I want

to

do a home birth, for two, the hospital near us doesn't deliver babies. That

means that in labor, I " ll be looking at an hour and a half drive to deliver.

With baby #3, I had to go on Flight for Life with a shot of Mag Sulf to slow

down the birth because I was going so fast and the hospital was so far (we were

two weeks early so weren't ready to do this at home). I'm thinking I may not

HAVE an hour and a half to make it to the hospital, so home birth is pretty

much a necessity, which means a midwife. But man, oh man, how disappointed I

was to see her do that.

What we've decided is this: We're going to use her, but DH and one of my

moms will be there, and they won't let her use neat EO's on me or the baby. I

have seven months to educate her. I shudder at the thought of her using neat

EOs on a newborn. Maybe I can show her enough information that she will learn

this is wrong and she will change her ways. But if not, I'll have enough

people here that she won't be doing that to me or " Billy Bob " .

Thanks for listening!

Invite her to join this list. Good luck with your endeavors.

For an emergency, even if a hospital doesn't have a labor/delivery area...it,

by law ( in the US ) has to give emergency care...then transport. I know

this...I worked as a secretary in a psych hospital, and a lady came in off the

street because she saw the word hospital. They were required to take care of

her until the lady had delivered her newborn. Do you have an ambulance service?

Paramedics and EMT's are trained in childbirth. I would trust them before I

would some doctors I know.

Keisha- I am glad you decided to use her for her skill and how she

made you feel as a MW and not just because of her preference or use

of oils. As a doula, Childbirth Educator and Midwives Apprentice, I

would suggest that you inform her of your preference. Just like with

anything else. Just because she uses EO's neat doesn't mean she is a

bad person, maybe she is just not as informed. (I know many more

feel strongly about that, but I will leave it at that.) As with

anyone or any caregiver I advocate my clients to make their wishes

and preferences known. I wouldn't just use others there to watch her

per se, so she does not do that to you. Tell her clearly and

concisely. Maybe even make it dh's job to apply oils to you during

labor, etc... I have had dh's do that many times, to help include

them more in the birth. As a huge homebirth advocate also, I

understand how you are feeling. But truly, when it is hard to find a

good midwife in many parts, you can help educate her, or at least

change the way she uses the oils on you. HTH! :)

Hi Keisha,

maybe I do not understand the whole picture, but IMHO you should not be

so afraid. My boys were all born in our

home in Belgium, which was quit unusal in Belgium, compared to The

Netherlands where this is very comon.

A good midwife is the key to good birthgiving. Even if she uses YL oils

and uses some oils neat (as I also do from time to time)

does not mean that she intends to force you to use EO's neat on your baby!

Some oils CAN be used neat, but they are exceptions of course, in

special circumstances.

Yes, as someone pointed out, you still have the time to helps her

finding new and safer uses of oils, explain your position,

but not all people using YL oils are IMHO criminals or dangerous!

Even if you had to go to hospital you must have a clear opinion of what

you like and what you do not like, talk about it BEFORE

the moment comes, that's the most important. It's true that when the

pain is coming it's much more difficult to resist to pressure,

but, hey, that's where the man can also do something, not?

I cherisch the precious moments of the birth of my children, and can

also assure you that not one birth is similar: I have 3 boys,

the first one came very rapidly, the second in a difficult way, the

third one waited a long moment before deciding that he's time was there,

and came then rapidly too...

BTW: our " midwife " was a man!

:-)

I'd like to thank everyone for their comments, suggestions, and just general

commisserating on the midwife thing. I will make sure that I make her

understand that no neat EO's are to be used on myself or baby. What I heard

from

ya'll was just what I needed to hear!

Hi...I am new and confused and puzzled by everyone's language here.

What is a neat EO? What is wrong with Young Living oils? I try my best to

decipher what you guys are talking about but sometimes it is like reading Latin

and Lord knows I can't do that either.....:-)
