~Why Choose Oils with a high Gamma Linoleic Acid (GLA) Content?

 

Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) are just as essential as vitamins, mineral

salts and proteins. They are basic substances from which not only skin lipids

(ceramides) and cell membranes

 

(phospholipids) but also hormones and autocoids (e.g., prostaglandins) are

synthesized.

 

 

 

Importance of PUFAs for the skin:

 

When applied topically, unsaturated fatty acids, as contained for example in

Borage, Evening Primrose, and Kukui Nut Oils (all especially rich in

gamma-linolenic acid), are characterized by

 

many positive effects.

 

 

 

Improved elasticity of the skin:

 

The structure and properties of the cell membranes and lamellar skin lipids

depend very largely on the type and composition of the phospholipids or

ceramides forming the double lipid layers.

 

If only saturated fatty acids are present, stiff and rigid cell membranes or

skin lipids are formed. In contrast to this, phospholipids and ceramides with a

high content of unsaturated fatty acids, such as linoleic acid or

gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), form structures which are more mobile and flexible.

The reason for this effect could be the lower inter- and intra-molecular forces

due to the more sharply angled molecular structure of the unsaturated fatty

acids. The result is an increase in the elasticity of the skin since

un-saturated fatty acids are incorporated in the cell membranes of the skin on

the one hand and in the skin lipids (ceramide structures) on the other.

 

 

 

Enhanced barrier function of the skin:

 

The barrier function of the skin is enhanced. The probable reason for this is

the greater packing

 

density of the lamellar skin lipids with a high PUFA component, especially GLA.

 

 

 

Reduced transepidermal water loss:

 

One effect of the enhanced barrier function of the skin is the reduction of the

transepidermal water loss. Thus, for example, in the skin of hairless mice which

are first given a diet

 

free from essential fatty acids, an alcoholic gel with a content of 1.5% borage

oil applied daily lowers the transepidermal water loss by about 68% already

after four days (P.M. Elias,

 

1989)

 

 

 

To sum up, it may be said that PUFA-nourished skin appears younger and smoother.

 

 

 

Symptoms with a PUFA deficiency:

 

Just how important unsaturated fatty acids are for the skin is most evident when

the genesis of a PUFA deficiency is considered:

 

~First of all, the physiological water regulation of the skin is impaired.

 

~This leads to high transepidermal water losses.

 

~As a consequence of this, the skin becomes dry and loses its smoothness.

 

~Finally, with a severe PUFA deficiency, cracks develop in the skin and wound

healing is delayed.

 

~Irregularities in the keratin structure of the skin then result from this.

 

~Unorganized epidermal layers are the consequence.

 

~The skin is damaged.

 

 

 

Of the unsaturated fatty acids, gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), as contained, for

example, in Borage, Evening Primrose, and Kukui Nut Oils, is of special

importance for beauty care. PUFAs should

 

be used in day and night creams, body lotions, shampoos, sun care products and

as a constituent of anti-wrinkle creams.

 

 

 

A dosage of 0.25% - 1.25% GLA is recommended for skin care products.
