Guest guest
I got this off a business list I'm on. *************************** Google has implemented a new feature wherein you can type someone's telephone number into the search bar and hit enter and then you will be given a map to their house. Everyone should be aware of this! Note that you can have your phone number removed or blocked. Before forwarding this, I tested it by typing my telephone number in www.google.com. My phone number came up, and when I clicked on the MapQuest link, it actually mapped out where I live. Quite scary. Please look up your own number. Read below for details. Think about it--if a child, ANYONE gives out his/her phone number, someone can actually now look it up to find out where he/she lives. The safety issues are obvious, and alarming. In order to test whether your phone number is mapped, go to: http://www.google.com Type your phone number in the search bar (i.e.555-555-1212) and hit enter. If you want to BLOCK Google from divulging your private information, simply click on phonebook results link above your phone number and scroll down. I removed my name, but it takes 48-hours. If you are unlisted in the phone book, you might not be in there, but it is a good idea just to check. If your number does come up if you hit map, it will show you a direct map to your house... Might want to pass this on to friends and family. Cheers! Guest guest
Wow, that is pretty scary. Fortunately the location they have for us is way out dated. Removed our names anyway....4 little girls to look out for. I wonder if the other search engines do this also? Guest guest
Thank God I had the sense to drop the land line and go with a cell phone.... I just checked.. this is true. Put in my neighbor's phone and it came up with her " people search " listing with a click here for map feature. Kirstin > Wow, that is pretty scary. It didn't work for me, there were no results. I also typed in my name and got 1,820 results...many of which contain my address. I think it's very easy to track anyone who has a website though. Guest guest
I pay a nominal fee to have an unlisted phone number, and now I am glad that I do. I have children and I do not want that kind of information out there. My suggestion is to not have your # published. Rahnny
Guest guest
I don't understand why people are getting upset over this. It's nothing new. It isn't something that Goggle came up with - it's been going on since the internet was invented and before ! A few years ago, there was a bunch of articles in teh local papers telling people not to worry if they see strangers taking pictures of every house on the street because the picture were going to be a part of a computerized map of the area. There are many, many places where you can go on line and get addresses with maps to the address. Some have pictures, some don't. It isn't hard to track down anyone if you have their address or their name The internet has just made it faster & easier. Anyone can find you if your name is in the phone book. You can do a background check for very little $ on line and off. If you've ever paid by check, it has your addy & usually phone number and anyone who sees it will also see your addy & phone. A grocery store I used to work at used the checks to contact a customer who picked up the wrong bag many times. The store had a video rental dept. and it was a common mistake for the video rentals from one customer to get put into the bags of the person ahead of them at the register by the baggers. Most customers paid by check so it was real easy to pull the checks out of my drawer and find the right one and give them a call. Most places, you can take a license plate number into the DMV or police department and they will tell you who owns that vehicle. And if you have every bought anything thru the mail, your mailing address is on who knows how many millions of mailing lists. Guest guest
I, for one, am very concerned about this issue. I have a 23 year old daughter who is not " up to speed " for her age. Mentally, she is about 14. Krysti lives on her own in subsidized housing and has an eleven month old son. Krysti also has many ads on singles sites (which I don't exactly like, but she is 23). Can you imagine the implications if the " wrong " person gets her phone number and tracks her to her apartment??? In this case, this phone number mapping/tracking is a major disaster waiting to happen. What would you do if your daughter were in this situation? Think about it. Guest guest
I understand your point but they can get her phone number from the phone book and find her that way if they wanted to find her.By having her own apt. and utilities in her name, she's made it easier to find her By 'putting herself out there' with the ads on line or in the newspaper, she's even more open to it. Many town/county governments, real estate offices, and survey companies are doing it too (keeping photos of every house in the area). You would be shocked to find out how many places have your name, phone number and more personal information and how easy it is to get that information on anyone Anyone can ride thru a store parking lot and write down license plate numbers. For a few bucks, they can get the names of the owners of those cars from the local DMV. You can then have all kinds of background checks done on those names if you're willing to pay for it and in a short time, you can have most of that person's life history. And all you did 'wrong' was go shopping. Paula ........in Michigan Coming soon Farm Fresh Soaps & Candles I, for one, am very concerned about this issue. Guest guest
Yes, it is amazing at the information that's literally at anyone's fingertips! Hence, the reason I am glad we have the " Right to bear Arms " and I don't mean the arms attached to my body. I feel it's my right and my duty to 'protect' my family if needed. Nuff said here....done spent my 2 cents. LOL Ya'll take care, Candy
Guest guest
Google does have an opt out feature for your telephone numbers. A couple of years ago, this information was going around the Internet and it explained where the opt out button was. Of course time has gone by and I don't remember where it is located. I would just " google for the instructions. Guest guest
I am in New Zealand and my phone number didn't give any results at all when I googled it.. However when I put in my maiden name and married name I found a whole lot of other people with my names doing all sorts of interesting things, but I wasn't there personally. I just did a search with your name and got 98 hits - don't know if any of them are you - on goggle. Go to this site http://find.intelius.com/search-name.php?ReportType=1 & and type in your name. I typed in search engines in the search bar and came up with all kinds of search engines, went to each one and typed my name in - got different results on every one. Guest guest
Hi Paula, Thanks for that - I did search with the apostrophes and yes there are many hits in google but only two of them relate to me and one is work, I haven't been able to get the phone number in google to find me in Australia, but when compared to online telephone directories - is google much different to that? Has anyone with a private/unlisted number done a search on their phone number and found links to their address with maps? Surely if you have an unlisted number it wouldn't work? Guest guest
I was just trying with names. Found out there are over 200 women out there with the same name as me ! Amazed at how many times I saw my DH's name - he isn't real sure how to turn the computer on, let alone use it, and his dad's name - his dad knows less about computers than DH does ! Guest guest
This kind of thing has been out there for years, it's nothing new and it's not just on google. What about all those navigation programs in the on-board computers in the newer cars ? Type in an address and they will give direction to your door, often with a photo. If you know someone's name, you can run a background check on them on line for a few $$$, many states sell the list of names of driver's license holders. Those discount cards from the grocery store ? The stores sell their 'mailing/customer' lists too, along with utility companies, etc.... You can ride thru any parking lot or along any street, write down a license plate number and go to your nearest DMV and they will run the plate number for you and tell you who it belongs to. Some states even publish directories of license plate numbers. Once you get a drivers license, rent an apartment, have utilities in your name, you really have very, very little that is truly private.
