Guest guest
Are there any pet bird owners on this list? With 900 members I sure hope so! I have 3 birds, a Lilac Crowned Amazon (Tory), a Max. Pionus (Rio), and a lil bitty cockatiel (Kiwi). I had a Green conure (Hootie) but he is no longer with us... The three I have now are new to the home, all within the last few months. I never had any problem with diffusing oils with the conure, but then to be honest I never really thought about it. His cage was not located in the major traffic areas of the home like the new 3 are. Since birds have very sensitive and highly developed respiratory systems, has anyone had any complications with the use (diffused) of EO's? Our avian vet said to use caution, but he is not well versed in EO use with birds... And he is one of the best! He is somewhat familiar with EO's but never had anything specific come up or read anything in his journals about reactions. Has anyone else had any experience with this or heard, read, or otherwise have any useful information about this for me? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks Laura Mail - now with 250MB free storage. Learn more. http://info.mail./mail_250
Guest guest
Hi, Laura! Yes - I have a double yellow head. I don't diffuse in " his " room - aka the living room. lol Who's your vet? I thought I had the best one - lol - Dr. James McKinley. I can ask him if you like - unless you have the same vet. Cindy - Are there any pet bird owners on this list? With 900 members I sure hope so! Guest guest
Thanks Cindy! > Yes - I have a double yellow head. I don't diffuse in " his " room - aka the living room. lol Yep mine have taken over the livingroom also! lol Luckily I have been out of oils (for all intents and purposes) for several months so have had nothing to worry about. But I am restocking soooooo.... Do you diffuse in the rooms close by? My house now is pretty small so its not a far stretch from one room to the next.. and with 3 good sized cages you can image no place on my floor is without seed hulls (they absolutely refuse to go to pellets... but fresh fruits and veggies take care of the rest that seeds miss). Sometimes I think my Lilac Crowned needs a good dose of lavender! She is our night talker/stalker! We got her from someone who was moving to CA and couldn't take all her birds.. so she is pretty set in her ways! > Who's your vet? I thought I had the best one - lol - Dr. James McKinley. I can ask him if you like - unless you have the same vet. Our vet is Kenneth Kirlin in San Antonio. (I used a different vet for our dog since we have been going there for years and they recommended Dr. Kirlin to us a great avian vet - I have not been disappointed. In fact, one of our cockatiels was injured and I had to take her to the Emergency Pet Clinic... they always contact your regular vet (It was about 2 hours after his closing time). He keep in contact with the Pet ER throughout the night giving them advice on treatment, even tho it was unlikely to help. The Pet ER said he called them several times. We lost Sunny, despite everyone's efforts *sigh* I really miss that silly bird! She was a sweetie. Are you in San Antonio too? We don't have many avian vets here. I used to use Dr. Thomas Vice but he is getting old (and charges way too much for all his services - even more than our dog's vet who is in the " ritzy " area of town just down the street!) but I didn't like the new vet (can't remb his name) who is starting to take over the avian vet services... he just seemed rude and abrupt.. didn't want to answer any questions. It would great if you asked your vet if he has any specific knowledge about birds and EO's... I have scoured the net and found nothing at all! This was really surprising. I've emailed many breeders and most had no clue what EO's were... posted to groups and no one that likes birds seems to like EO's too! How strange! It's been a frustrating trying to find information. Any help you can give me would be great! Thanks! Laura
Guest guest
We have a relatively small house, so anything I do you can pretty much smell throughout the house - lol. I burn candles, not diffuse. I don't know what/if there is a difference as far as the bird is concerned, but I'll ask Dr. M. Nope - I'm in NJ. Dr. McKinley is the only avian vet near me, and he's about 1/2 hour away - next closest is Philadelphia - 2 hrs. So sorry to hear about Sunny - we lost Percy, PJ's predecessor about 16 years ago in a kitchen accident. Now PJ is not allowed anywhere NEAR the kitchen. So many birds die needlessly because their owners don't know how to keep them safe. Since we lost Percy, I've been someone anal about PJ's safety. : ) Cindy - Thanks Cindy! > Yes - I have a double yellow head. Guest guest
I would be interested in any information that a vet would have to say also. I have 6 parrots and a couple dozen finches and doves in the dining room. I burn incense in another part of the house and do have scented candles and EO's but I don't have them close to the birds' room. Guest guest
As the house-sharer with 5 parrots, 6 tiels, a dove and God only knows what else, I've also heard candles and EO's are bad combos with psittacines. You know Teflon's a no-no, right? And that includes self cleaning ovens, and coated light bulbs too. It produces a toxic gas when hot. I personally know of somebody who's beloved parrots were killed from teflon - it's not just hype. I can't give you any specifics as to which eo's are bad, I just do ALL my soap making in the front kitchen, and the birds don't come out until it's in the oven and covered, or the lotions put away, etc. No candles in this house, ever. i won't take chances with my babies lives. For me, that's a small price to pay. Guest guest
Really? No candles ever? I hadn't heard that. I get a lot of flack from my dh about my candles, but PJ seems ok with them. Now I have to ask Dr. M about candles, too! Cindy - As the house-sharer with 5 parrots, 6 tiels, a dove and God only knows what else, I've also heard candles and EO's are bad combos with psittacines. It will kill them if they get too much of the gas that comes off of it. My son, who is a microbilogist, told me this after he got his two green African parrots. So I would hassard to guess that the EOs could be dangerous too depending of course on what and how much. I will ask him if he knows anything next time I talk to him. Guest guest
I have parakeets. They are close to my alter where I burn quite a bit of incense, but they don't appear bothered by it. I always open up the window when I burn it also. I've heard about the cooking thing and where they sit is outside the kitchen, so perhaps they are far away enough. I don't know about using EO with them. I personally wouldn't use in regards to a health issue, but I don't know about a diffuser.
