Guest guest
Hi guys, Sorry Jan and other folk, that other post was supposed to go private, I keep forgetting that I need to copy and paste the addy. Just went outside a little while ago, I hadn't seen Little Flock yet this morning. I thought maybe that wiley bird was nesting and that Maybe I could find where she had been hiding her eggs. Came around the corner and there she was. Not a pretty sight and I won't go into the details but I think a raccoon got her last night. Now I have to go clean up the whole mess before the kids get home. I called my husband and told him and he said " Never mind, when we move you can get a new duck " . Now I know he was doing his best, but am I the only one who thinks that sounds vaguely obscene? >sigh< I loved that duck. She was a Swedish blue. A big girl. I used to hold her in the palm of my hand and let her sleep on me shoulder when she was little (with a baby spit up rag over me shoulder as she tended to be a little " messy " . LOL!). Ah well. Of to me grim reaper detail. Cheers! Guest guest
Sorry to hear about your duck. They all have different personalities and ours would follow you around like you're the head of their flock if we didn't keep them penned up. We had a problem one summer with a raccoon getting into the chicken coop.Took care of him with a shot gun but not before loosing many chickens and 2 rabbits. What a mess !! They will kill just for the joy of killing Paula ........in Michigan Coming soon Farm Fresh Soaps & Candles --- Woobey Queen <WoobeyQueen wrote: > >sigh< I loved that duck. She was a Swedish blue. Guest guest
Kathleen, Sorry to hear about the duck...I love ducks! but are you sure it was a raccoon? Mine was killed by a weasel......you can tell, they only eat the head.... (Sorry for those with a weak stomach on that one....) Raccoons are dear to my heart. I have a mama raccoon, Daisy, who has been coming around for 4 years now. After she has her babies, she brings them up on the deck to eat cat food. She even bangs on the door to let me know she is there and to show me the *brats* (as I call them!). Now, I have kittens and cats around constantly. They are never attacked by the raccoons and when we had ducks, they never bothered them either. Raccoons get a bad rep sometimes.....personally I think they are wonderful and very entertaining. Guest guest
Have you ever seen a raccoon on a killing spree ? They don't kill them for food. They won't eat the birds, just go to the next one and tear it apart and leave it. If you have rabbits in pens, they will pull the bottom of the cage apart and try to pull the rabbit out, killing & shredding it in the process. While I understand them killing the birds to silence them, rabbits aren't noisy animals. I don't know where you are but around here, raccoons, skunks, & weasels are major headaches to egg farmers. One of my former neighbors lost nearly 20 chickens to a raccoon in 1 night. Guest guest
Many condolences, Kathleen.... we used to have a spectacled Amazon who met and early death about 15 years ago. Guest guest
Sorry to hear about your loss Woobey. Sounds like this was a special bird. Alas, finding dead birds is one of the hazards of raising the critters. I hate it. I stopped raising egg laying chickens because of all the predators. We've had them eaten by black bears, grizzlies, coyotes, raccoons, skunks, goss hawks, and worst of all domestic dogs. I don't mind sharing with the wildlife but I really resent dogs. So now I just raise meat birds, a few months of the year. They have a great life while it lasts. Ien in the Kootenays, chicken for dinner tonight *******************************

Guest guest
I hear ya - my DYH (PJ) clucks like a chicken - he's never been in the company of chickens, so I don't know how or why, but he clucks while he sits in his food bowl every morning. He also meows, but that's explainable (is that a word? LOL) - my grandmother's cat used to sit on the chair of the sofa next to his cage and " converse " with PJ. We have 3 vocal dogs, and he has YET to bark. Go figure. They are characters, aren't they? Guest guest
Kathleen, I am so sorry to hear about your duck. I had two baby mallards, and my dog killed them, when they got out of their pen. We'd always make sure the dog was put up, and let the ducks out to roam, and go swimming in the pond. They were adorable. But they managed to 'break out' of the pen one day, and when I went out to feed them, I found them gone. I had a bad feeling, and asked my dog where the ducks were (like HE'D know right?) A few minutes later, he came home, carrying the ducks in his mouth. <sigh> He knew EXACTLY what I was talking about. So, I say he killed them....but maybe he didn't. But he knew where they were, and he brought them home to me. At least they weren't mangled....they were just dead. <shrug> I honestly don't know for sure what happened to them. We gave them a nice burial. Hopefully I will be able to get more ducks one day soon. Take care, Candy
Guest guest
>>>> " asked my dog where the ducks were (like HE'D know right?) I had a new cat in the household, and one of my dogs was fine with it, but one was giving the cat endless grief. Well, I gave her (Coyote the dog) lecture #43 about how Dorito (the cat) was a member of the household too, and she should be nice to him, etc, etc. Well, she sulked for a couple of days, but ever since then she's been good with him. Never ceases to amaze me. Ivy
