uti in small child

One of the girls I work with has a little girl, about 1 year old,

she asked me what she could do to help the little girl get rid of a

uti. She has taken the girl to the dr and he prescribed a strong

antibiotic. It seemed to kick it but after a few days the uti has

returned. She called the dr and another round of antibiotics was

ordered. She asked me what else she could do. Is there something

you wonderful folks could suggest for this problem? I have some

essential oils and apricot kernel and grapeseed carriers. Maybe a

soothing bath oil? Thanks in advance, Kathy

Hi,

I have a few suggestions. Absolutely no commercial bath products in the bath

water. Sea Salt and maybe a tiny touch of Lavender Eo. No powder or beauty

products on her privates or panties. Cotton panties are the best and a loose fit

is best. No scented bath tissue. Limit the sugar intake, bacteria feeds on it.

Going to the restroom often, and of course drinking lots of water.

I hear that corn silk tea helps UTI's. Also someone on this list mentioned

baking soda in water to drink.

Kathy,

1st off.....what types of foods/drinks is she giving the child? I know that

my oldest daughter kept having trouble with UTI's, and very very bad diaper

rash because of apple juice. She did well eating apples, but the juice was

far too acidic for her, so we removed the apple juice from her diet. She

also had a problem with grape juice....however, as long as I diluted it with

water 1/2 and 1/2, she did okay with it. I she also had trouble with full

strength orange juice. I diluted it as well (same as the grape juice).

Also, if gerber still has the juices that are mixed with yogurt....those

could be beneficial, if she can tolerate the type of juice the yogurt is

mixed with. Otherwise, some regular yogurt could be fed to the child, to

help add back the 'good bacteria' that the antibiotic has killed off.

If you need further information, I will be more than glad to 'turn on the

brain' and see what else I can remember. I may have to pull out the baby

book where I wrote this kind of stuff down. :)

OH! One more thing. If the child is still in diapers....part of the

problem could be the type of diaper she is using. My daughter couldn't wear

pampers....she had to wear huggies. Then when she got older, we could use

other brands....but she could never wear pampers. :)

Anyway, let me know if I can be of more help.

Apart from the standby Cranberry juice,

and the good advice on cotton panties,

a good probiotic aimed at children is a

must.

Especially if she has been given ANTIbiotics!

They wipe out the good bacteria along with

the bad and make her more vulnerable for

future miseries.

I may start to trust doctors again the day

they automatically include a prescription

for probiotics with every prescription for

antibiotics.

Children need a different blend than adults.

So just feeding them some yoghurt is not enough.

The best blend that i know about is here:

http://natren.com.

They have a special blend for infants. It is also

a great site for info on probiotics, and you can

often get Natren cheaper here: http://vitacost.com

Sorry if I sound like broken record, but

probiotics and gut health in general is so

basic and vital to everyone!

A great read on the topic is chapter 2 of

" Lessons from the Miracle Doctors " by

Jon Barron.

The whole book is excellent. This man understands

in a deep way how herbs are different from drugs.

He originally wrote it for a company " Healing

America " that he is no longer involved with.

So some of the recommendations refer in an

indirect way to those products.

It can be downloaded for free at Jon Barron's

website: http://jonbarron.org

Get that child some probiotics, the good bacteria found in yogurt, it

would be impossible to get the amount of good bacteria she needs at

this point from just yogurt. Look at the health food store for

dinosaur chewable or Advocare sells biotic buddies that are in powder

form that can be eaten like candle or stirred into a drink.

There are several probiotics in powder form made specifically for

young children. Check in the refrigerator at any vitamin store. I

like Natren the best. Spendy by quite an excellent product.

Wishing you the best,

Michelle

Sometimes topically applied yogurt will help

particularly if it's vaginal, not as much into the

urinary tract. Discontinue all bubbling products like

bath gels, bubble bath, etc that she might bathe with.

For the next couple of weeks, castile soap on a

washcloth.

Try acidifying the system. Cranberry juice (no sugar,

pure juice only), no sugars if possible, and as

organic as possible foods.

Get her on a probiotic supplement that she can take

with food and water, they should have them available

in a health food store. Antibiotics can strip the

body of ALL bacteria, both good and bad.

Best,

Kirstin

Hi

this might be a really simple solution. Make sure that at nappy

change time she is always cleaned from the top of the nappy area down

towards the bottom. When cleaning her bottom, make sure to clean

wiping away from the vagina and urethra. Females have very short

urethras and it's very easy for bacteria to make its way up there and

cause infections.

Also consider the use of wipes and commercial bath and cleaning

products. Sometimes what seems to be a uti might actually be an

irritation, which might explain why the antibiotics aren't working.

Try just using warm water and cotton wool at nappy change time and

nothing in the bath

hope this helps
