For all you folks interested in my spacey stuff...

Even as I type, the Huygens Probe, which the Cassini Spacecraft has

ferried into outer space for the last 7+ years, to Saturn's moon

Titan, is almost finished with it's descent through Titan's

atmosphere to the surface. Over the next few hours, parachutes will

deploy, the heat shield will be discarded, and the probe will settle

(hopefully) gently onto Titan's surface. Whether it lands on liquid,

muddy stuff, or rocks is unknown, but tomorrow morning hopefully

we'll find out!

We'll look for a radio signal at around 2:17 a.m. Pacific time, and

surface impact at 4:34 a.m. Cassini will start transmitting data to

earth at 7:14 a.m., and by 2:00 p.m. we should see some images taken

by the cameras onboard the Probe. It's gonna be a really exciting

day tomorrow!

For more info, and to check out the current events and very very cool

pictures, go to http://saturn.jpl.nasa.gov/

Here's the schedule of upcoming press coverage from the European

Space Operations Center in Darmstadt, Germany (times are listed in

Eastern time; you'll have to do your own math):

January 14, Friday

3 a.m. - Live Coverage Begins

11:15 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. - Huygens Probe News Briefing (will confirm

if data is being received)

5 p.m. - 6 p.m. - ESA Commentary and " Presentation of First Triplet

Image of/data from Titan "

January 15, Saturday

5 a.m. - 6 a.m. - ESA News Briefing " Early Look at Science Results "

NASA TV schedule:

ESA TV schedule:

These pages will be webcasting events over the Internet:

Keep your fingers and toes crossed that the Probe lands in one piece

and in a good orientation so it can send data to the Cassini

spacecraft to relay to Earth.

Cheers!!!

Karen :)
