OT: Whooping Cough

Anyway, I was wondering, what can be done for a cough that even prescription

hydrocodone/codeine cough meds won't help. I feel really bad for my ds, he

has

got a double intraoccular hemmorhage in both eyes from coughing. Both of his

eyes are black from it. He coughs so hard he vomits several times a day. I

have tried everything I can think of to help him. He is 8 years old. He is

sleeping in the recliner to keep him more upright. We are keeping the house

cool

- about 65 - because he does better. I have been using a crockpot with water

and peppermint, camphor, and eucalyptus EO's to diffuse in the room as well

as a

cool mist humidifier. He has not been feverish or anything like that which

is

not uncommon for whooping cough. To read more about it or to hear what it

sounds like, if anyone is interested, you can check out

www.whoopingcough.net to

learn the signs and symptoms of it.

Hi Jill,

Sympathies to you and your son, WC is nasty.

Like C-M I find the eye problem concerning and think a doctor should take

another look at this.

In the meantime I think I'd look to more calming oils to vaporise. The oils

you mention can all be a bit strong and may " catch " in the throat triggering

the cough reaction. Yarrow, lemon & frankincense all help ease my asthma

cough (which gets uncontrollable at times - setting off the asthma) I also

find Clary sage helpful as well. I don't use steam vapour method as steam

(plain, no oils) affects my chest and breathing but then, I have asthma not

WC. If you don't have a vaporiser, try putting one drop of a calming oil on

a tissue and placing it near (not on) him or wafting it in the air around

him.

Hyssop is wonderful for coughs - but needs caution in its use, especially

round children. Having said that, one drop (no more) on a tissue wafted in

the air for a minute or two (so it wasn't continuous exposure) eased my

Grand daughters WC spasms very quickly.

HTH - and that your son recovers speedily.

(These are ideas to help ease symptoms - not treat the disease!)

Love

Liz
