Guest guest
Thanks to everyone who replied to my questions. I did check out Faith in Nature, and they do claim no synthetic preservatives in most of their products but use parabens in all their lotions. Dang! So, I will continue to use essential oils and put an expiration date on my products. My customers tend to be the type of people who will go great lengths to avoid chemicals, so I think they're ok with the shorter shelf life of my products. By all means if anyone has further input please let me know! Oh and I have checked out Biopein, at least what's been written about it. It apparently works well but has a very strong, overpowering odor. So...who would want to use that in their bodycare products? I'm hoping to get a sample and try it out, but since it's made of extracts from Rosemary, Thyme, etc. I'm sure it has a strong green smell that will be hard to mask. Thanks again! Guest guest
Another side of the question Zo Heres a mini study for all. The head of a lab where I worked as a Supervisor and I did studies on three agents 1. GSE alone mixed with Methycillin Resistant Staph Aureas, Vancomycin Resistant Staph ane multiple other bacterias. The final study has not been documented yet this is a summation. 2. ROE alone With the above 3. Lippia Javanica-African verbena alone with the above. We filled petri dishes 10 for each agent. We kept the cultures in the warmer for 72 hours, after 72 hours no increased growth of bacterias. Remember we wanted to do a titrating experiment so we just started with 2 gtts.(drops) per dish of each agent. The lippia javanica was horrible to work with, it is a Turpine used in Africa in order to preserve meat. It stunk up the whole lab and we were trying to do this on the slide. We sterilized the bottles with the agents in them in the OR sterilizer. We then did a study using 1. ROE and GSE 2. ROE and Lippia 3. ROE and Lippia 4. Lippia and GSE 5. Lippia and ROE 6. Lippia, ROE and GSE I submitted also an liquid based lotion with ROE, GSE and Lippia that has sat for 30 days, upon culture No Growth. Also a water based lotion with ROE and GSE 65 days old, upon culture no growth. A water based lotion with Lippia Javinica after 30 days the cultures grew out milions of wierd bacterias. We then ditched the Lippia. Note that the Lippia may have been compromised by the way it was obtained. We continued our little study for 9 months now. The ROE and GSE together killed the MRSA and the VRE. So we found that it kills strep, E-Coli (an naturally occuring bacteria in the gut and in feces, and a number of other bacterias. This gave us the best cell kill by using them in combination. The GSE alone and ROE alone didn't kill the bacterias but it didn't make them grow out more. This was not a FORMAL study. It was for my entertainment and enjoyment. We are going to continue to look at specimens for another 9 months. If you are interested in studying for yourselves, contact your local college micro teacher or you local high school microbiology teachers, some would love to do this kind of study and students love it because its real world stuff. Its lots of fun, my illness, looking at germs. Sincerely Trish Springstead RN www.mdcrafters.com
Guest guest
FYI: anyone interested in doing some microbiological experimenting with documentable results, SageScript Institute does challenge testing for very reasonable prices --it's completely affordable by the cottage industry soap/lotion/toiletries maker. Cindy Jones' testing and consulting was invaluable in helping me develop a product formulation that resulted in a preservative-free all natural product (not a lotion, however) with a reasonable expectations for product shelf life. I plan to do more testing with her as I develop more products for sale. The advantage of her services is that you will have a nice piece of paper clearly documenting the test and the results from a professional lab, instead of something you and your kid's chemistry teacher threw together (not that I'm knocking the grassroots lab idea, it's just not as documentable and will probably be a lot of effort ... when the educational / personal edification value wears off, call Cindy!). http://www.sagescript.com - " Zonella Gould " <zonella Saturday, November 12, 2005 5:03 AM Re: Natural Preservatives Another side of the question Zo Heres a mini study for all. Guest guest
I found a company that removes the sugars and what ever out of aloe vera juice so that it has a shelf life of 5 years. Now it looks like if you made a lotion/cream out of this 5 year aloe vera and did not introduce any water that it would last with out a preservative. What do you think? Guest guest
Hi Virginia, Yeah, Biopein does come with its issues cause of the cinnamon fraction in it - ah, that cinnamon, great at not only irritating germs to death - but some folks' skin too! I do want to hear more about the efficacy of their stuff. From what THEY have put out, it looks good, but it still isn't a " legal " preservative in the gov't handbook. As time goes on and hopefully more testing is done to prove or disprove the merits of their products. It would be really nice to know for sure! Right now, I, and most folks I know (including a biz partner for a new project), have simply experimented with the " -peins " from Bio-Botanica, but haven't switched to them as our regular preservatives. No matter how much I want to go all natural, effective preservation is a MUST, so this isn't one that can be lightly accepted! *Smile* Chris Concentrated Handmade Liquid Soaps All Natural, Perfect For The Body & Home <http://www.alittleolfactory.com/liquidsoapbase.htm> http://www.alittleolfactory.com/liquidsoapbase.htm Virginia Hi Chris, I have found with Bopein can cause reactions. One " tester " broke out in red rash on her face. I found the " scent " difficult to work with. I also think some cosmetic chemists have questioned the results published by Bio-Bontanica Virginia West Aussie
