Guest guest
Thank you for the list Michelle, It is indeed a very good list of things to avoid, but I do want to make one quick note about lye ... lye is a main ingredient used to make soap (as mentioned below - but it should just say fats, not specify only animal fats as vegetable fats can and are widely used too There is NO way around that. No lye, no soap! Lye in either the form of potassium hydroxide or sodium hydroxide is used to make any and all true soap out there! BUT when the soap is properly made there is no active lye left in the final product and the final product doesn't even contain the ingredient known as potassium or sodium hydroxide. It has become a different ingredient - a new chemical compound known as soap (and the chemical name will vary according to which oil was used in conjunction with the lye to make that soap i.e. sodium olivate - the soap made from the chemical reaction that occurs when sodium hydroxide and olive oil are combined ... which is known as saponification *Smile* Chris (list mom) http://www.alittleolfactory.com Michelle [michelle] <snipped> I found this (long) list of toxic ingredients to avoid in my files and thought I would pass it along. Good stuff to be aware of! All the best, Michelle http://www.holisticmenopause.com TOXIC INGREDIENTS TO AVOID LYE: also known as Sodium Hydroxide or Potassium Hydroxide. A highly concentrated watery solution of sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide. Lye is combined with animal fats to make bar soaps, which may corrode and dry out the skin. It is found in toothpaste, eye drops, and other personal care products. The MSDS for it says " POISON! DANGER! CORROSIVE. May be fatal if swallowed, harmful if inhaled. Causes burns to any area of contact, reacts with water, acids, and other materials. " (MSDS Sodium Hydroxide #S4034) <snipped>

I have often wondered about that. So is melt and pour glycerin based soap bad? I want to make true soap with lye, but it scares me! LOL Any tips?
