Guest guest
Hey Jane, > Hi Deb > I've never heard of a chocolate absolute. Chocolate is mostly made up of > milk and sugar with some cocoa (if you're lucky!). So do you mean Cocoa > absolute? I've never heard of an absolute being made from cocoa either. She means Cocoa Absolute .. often called by the Common Name Cocoa or Chocolate Absolute .. Botanical Name is Theobroma cacao .. extracted from the Cocoa Bean .. same way Vanilla Absolute is extracted. I and forty eleven other folks around the world have been selling it for many, many years. I go through 8-10 kilos a month and its now a lot cheaper than it was when I started. Pricing of quality products is due to variables beyond anyone's control. > Vanilla absolute is available and that smells sort of like chocolate. True it does .. but put it next to Cocoa Absolute and you sniff a real contrast. Mix Cocoa Absolute with a tad of Cold Pressed Red Mandarin (Citrus reticulata) and its Hawg Heaven time. > Otherwise, as we've talked about before, infuse a fresh vanilla pod in > one or other of your balm ingredients = vanilla 'flavour'. Not much though .. I have a number of infused Vanilla concoctions .. and good they are .. but nothing like the Absolute. Its finer'n frog hair split three ways and much higher than it was when I started selling it; in fact its so high I wouldn't buy it if I didn't sell it. ;-) > As for safety, Butch posted a great description of absolutes very recently > and explained about the chemicals used to extract them. That may be why > some people react to them. The lips are very delicate skin so maybe an > infusion as suggested above would be gentler? Almost any Absolute is safe for cosmetics and perfumery .. but I can't say anything about lip balms .. though someone on this list does use my Cocoa Absolute for that purpose .. forget who it was. Lips can be tricky .. in more ways than one. ;-) But as for the solvents used in making Absolutes .. the first, Hexane, is also used in making many of the cooking oils found in the kitchen .. and the grain alcohol is simply what we drink when we wanna forget about PCs and Down Servers and damn bureaucrats and such .. likely it is that a person would react just as quickly to an Essential Oil as they would to an Absolute on the lips .. and more likely it is they would react to a synthetic fragrance oil .. which is the most commonly used substance for that purpose anyway. Am I recommending any EO, FO or Absolute for the lips? Nope! Why? Cause I know that lips can be more sensitive than some other parts of the body .. and I just don't know that much about it as EO/Absolutes are not normally tested on the lips. Would I use a lip balm with an EO or Absolute .. yep .. sho'nuf would. > Kind regards > Jane And here .. y'all keep smiling. :-) Butch http://www.AV-AT.com > Is Choc absolute safe to use in lip balm? > Thanks, > Warmest Regards, > Deb > http://www.cottagehillsoaps.com

Sounds gorgeous! You live and learn ... does anyone know of a UK source of cocoa absolute? I'd like to try it out. Jane
