Hi Y'all,

I got more crap on my PC now than I need .. maybe .. but it all comes

in handy. Most of it is new to me .. added since I returned from the

USA in October .. by a 22 year old feller here who has studied the

insides and outsides of PCs since he was 8-9 years old.

My system does a Virus Scan every 24 hours .. so one thing y'all can

bet your bottom dollar on is that you won't get a virus from me. That

is not to say that you won't get one that claims to be from me .. I

get these all the time .. sometimes from my own folks in Maryland.

But that is technically a Trojan that is generated from the PC of

someone who has my address, my company's address or your address .. in

their files. Odds are VERY HIGH that the actual source of that e-mail

is NOT the one shown in the From line.

Spam: If you get as much Spam as I do (cause I am on many newsgroups)

then you might want to get Mail Washer .. it is Freeware. Basically,

it allows all mail coming from your server to be listed in another

format that shows when and from whom and subject and size of what is

incoming, prior to you loading it into your In Box. It allows you to

delete or bounce an e-mail or Black List an address .. or do all at

one time .. and it remembers when you put an address on Black List.

Many advantages to this .. but like all systems, its not perfect and

there are some pros who try to beat it by using fictitious addresses

that won't take a bounce or changing their addresses on each spam mail.

But .. it allows me to make decisions rather than making them for me.

Example .. I have customers in 65 countries outside the USA and all

don't have English keyboards .. so their order for EO might come in as

ÌѧÑݽ²ÍêÃÀ½áºÏ£ <julie so I can click the post up

and read it before deciding to take it off Black List and put it on

Friend.

A good one that is .. I also used it before. Now I use Norton

Personal Firewall .. by Symantec .. a nice one. I get a couple of

dozen attempts a day to access my system .. the Firewall Intrusion

Detection System blocks them and tells me who they are. It comes with

a few other handy gadgets and widgets and such.

I also have Black Ice .. which detects and allows me to Block those

who attempt to penetrate for an hour, a day, a month .. or forever.

All the attempts to penetrate are not bad attempts .. some are necessary.

And I have Ad-Aware SE Personal which finds and destroys leeches that

try to hide in the system and suck the juice out while using my info

to generate ads. Problem with ALL such seekers is that technology

today is such that no system can block them all .. read that on a

Netscape Tech Report. The young feller comes in every 14 days or so

and removes more of them via laborous effort .. and each time he finds

a half dozen or so that escaped detection.

Finally .. I have the Norton Anti-Virus Professional Edition. To

date, it has caught EVERY incoming virus .. but checking incoming is

easier in that my server .. Superonline .. catches 98% of them .. when

its on line. ;-)

But the Norton Professional Edition also scans each outgoing message,

to include those I bounce using Mail Washer, so it sometimes takes 60

seconds or so for Mail Washer to delete 250 or so garbage mails. The

Anti-Virus scans them because when I bounce the spam back to sender

the Anti-Virus system can't distinguish between the legitimate mails I

am sending to y'all or those I am trying to bounce.

My son is an IBM Systems Engineer .. his comments regarding the e-mail

system today were like .. " Dad, experts recognize and accept that at

best, e-mail is problematic. " ;-)

And to you ..

> If all else fails, cry!

Or .. say To Hell with it, go to your local friendly, neighborhood pub

and comiserate with friends over a toddy or two .. and purty soon you

will find that its funny enough to laugh about. :-P

Y'all keep smiling. :-) Butch http://www.AV-AT.com
