Some of my native American families swear by taking a cup of Queen Ann's

They gather the seedpods and call them God's tea basket...

Cool! We have it growing wild along the

road sides here. It is such a pretty

plant.

I heard that Devil's Club root is good for

diabetes too.

In fact, an anecdotal story told to me

by the camp cook in an exploration camp

goes like this.

Warning: Howie liked his vanilla extract

and was not the most reliable source.

This story may or may not be true.

Anyhow, supposedly one of his colleagues

had gotten stuck in a bush camp. Snowed

in for weeks. The North of B.C. is pretty

big and wild. The guy was an insulin

dependant diabetic, and his insulin was

running out.

This old Indian told him to drink tea of Devil's

Club root. He took it for about three weeks

and not only survived but never needed

insulin again.

This anecdote may have gotten a bit

exaggerated. But Devil's Club does

have medicinal properties. Apparently

it is in the ginseng family.

Marilyn James, spokesperson for the

Sinixt people on whose traditional

territory I live, says it needs to be

gathered with respect.

I'd like to see anyone try to come

near it without respect, lol.

They don't call it Devil's Club

for nothing.

I take Metabazon, based on native

American medicine from the

South, occasionally to help prevent

hypoglycemia, the other end.

The plants seem to know whether

your blood sugar needs to go up or

down!
