Guest guest
Thank you everyone. Evelyn, the point you made below is what I did include in my original post. I know natural isn't just good - it's great when used correctly and wisely. My main concern is the skin grafting that he is undergoing. I've no idea what that involves, how that skin should be cared for at all. I would not want to suggest something blindly. A few weeks ago my daughter burned herself when she touched the side of our toaster oven (those things are evil) accidentally. I did not have any lavender eo on hand. What I did have is Butch's lavender hydrosol in the fridge. I poured out about a cupful and she lowered the side of her hand into the bowl. Maybe a minute later she asked how long she had to keep her hand in. I said I don't know and asked how her hand felt. She said " Fine. It doesn't hurt anymore that's why I'm asking. " You need to understand - this is a child who cries first then sucks in her breath to endure anything (such as when her old horse Candy stepped on her foot accidentally on purpose). She was her usual self quick as a wink. She did not even get that brown 'dead' layer of skin that you sometimes get after a cooking burn. So, I will be sending a spritzer bottle of the lavender angustifolia along with a conversation not to use it on any area that's being treated with any major care (i.e. grafting). May not be the right one traditionally but it worked on my daughter's hand. Will also include a bottle of rose hydrosol to try to help the little guy get some real sleep - not the sleep that comes from exhaustion of what he's been through or medication induced sleep. I do have heli (thanks to Janet's great coop!!) so I would like some ideas on how to put that into a salve for him when his skin is ready for that. Does anyone have a basic recipe for a base " salve " ? I immediately thought of when I'd asked for a " unpetroleum " jelly recipe but I would think that I don't want beeswax in this instance. Thank you again all for your help and sharing your experiences - although I'm sorry to hear how many folks have experienced burns. Ouch! Dale Now as for the emu oil....is it really from the bird?? Evelyn Millican There are a lot of healing butters and oils, including Helichrysum and black see oil, unrefined Shea and many others however, because of the severity of his burns please ask the doctors before using anything that could lead to more complications. Not saying that natural isn't good just that it must be used with caution in instances like this. Deep burns are dangerous.

I'm curious as to why you might omit beeswax? Bee products have very healing properties. Or are you thinking the product may be too 'stiff'? You can make a soft, very easily spreadable salve (using beeswax) by using about 4 parts oils to 1 part beeswax. As your mixture is cooling, stir it to form an 'un-petroleum jelly'. I don't have my recipe in front of me, but I make a salve using heli & lavender EO's in beeswax, mink oil, emu/ostrich oil, and squalane that is wonderful for my dd's scarring. We use it, after wounds are closed, following each of her surgeries, and as a daily regimine to help prevent/diminish scarring. I don't think you need to use all those carrier oils...anything simple will do. But, I happen to be the queen of overkill, so... HTH -- Have a wonderful day! Guest guest
Thanks Lisa!! I worried that I didn't know enough about ointments to end up using something that might 'clog/suffocate' the new skin that's why I thought I shouldn't use beeswax and be careful about which base oil to use. I'm never afraid to be told that my 'conclusion' is completely or partially wrong just always proceed with caution and in this case (poor little guy's major burns) proceed with extra caution. My major fault is that I ask to have everything explained to me like I'm 5 (as Denzel Washington's character said in Philadelphia). Drove my mom crazy but she never had to worry whether or not I was going to screw something up!!
