Guest guest
Received the following e-mail from a peer. Her nephew is 10 years old. I do not know what the burn was from. Can anyone suggest anything to help his skin heal and to help him mentally? I am sure he must be in pain and sedated a bit. Some one suggested arnica and St. John's Wort but I've no idea why really. I know the arnica can help with the pain and I know St. John's Wort can help with the emotional/mental aspects. However it is my thought that with sedation, pain killers and the burns still being fresh that these items may not be helpful - if not a bit harmful - if they are used too soon with the other treatments going on. " My nephew, Michael is doing better than the doctors had anticipated at this point. He is out of " critical condition " and now being watched closely in the ICU. He has undergone his first series of skin grafting on his leg and hand and so far things good. His face has only sustained deep 2nd degree burns and they feel it will heal with minimal scarring. His legs, chest, neck, arm, and hands are primarily deep 3rd & deep 2nd but the grafts will hopefully facilitate healing. " Any thoughts would be appreciated. I will try to find more information. Thank you in advance. Dale
Guest guest
I know that Emu Oil is great for burns and helps with scarring. There are numerous sites you can go to and read the advantages of this oil. I hope this helps some and will keep Michael in my thoughts and prayers. Guest guest
Hi Dale, I vote for emu! I had some mixed up into a salve with a little bit of tamanu, rose hip, SJW and some calendula infused oils and used it on myself when I had a blonde moment and grabbed the muffler on my lawnmower, not realizing what it was until I had second and third degree burns on my fingertips which started to blister within seconds and I put some of that on them and the pain and blistering were gone within an hour or so. In fact, I was even able to do my transcription work that night! Amazing! :-) I also put it on my dog (a greyhound who has skin that will tear like a nylon stocking) who ripped open under her " arm pit " area on a fence and had a 3-4 " inch gaping wound.....now you can barely see a faint scar where there is no hair, less than the size of a dime. Personally, I think SJW is a wonderful healer for nerves and nerve endings...I think for the psychological benefit, he'd have to take it internally. There's no scientific fact there, just my own experiences. HTH and Michael is definitely in my thoughts and prayers! Guest guest
Dale - Most certainly emu and some lavender. Our neighbor is paralyzed from the waist down and recently was burned severely by a chemical he was using to help his son refinish his kitchen cabinets. Lewis laid the cloth of varnish remover on his lap while working and when he got home his skin peeled off with his clothing. I happened over there a few days later and ran home to fix the emu/lavender for him to apply " if he wanted to. " I totally forgot about it until last week when I got a call from them begging for more. Seemed it has been a lifesaver for him. Said no prescription or OTC medication has helped like this combo. He said it has kept the skin soft while healing which has relieved the cracking and bleeding. I have used this combo myself and swear by it. It is so simple yet so effective. -Helen Hi Dale,
Guest guest
Too late for this occasion, But a proven thing for burns is the sap of a fir tree, especially the balsam fir. It makes a sticky band aid under which the skin heals elastic and wonderfully well, takes out the pain immediately. Something to remember when you go camping and the camp fire spits at you. The sticky part of this band aid gets very grody looking, but will only peel off when new skin has formed. One of the visitors to the island where I studied with Keewaydenoqua, became a medstudent who watched the 'miracle' of the balsam sap at the occasion of an incident on the island. She studied in Ann Arbor ( MI) and was given a semester to study herbalism on the island with Kee \, also wrote a dissertation on the healing power of Balsam fir. I used it when picking up a clamp that I had just used to solder a piece of silver ( Duh! ) and it was a commission that had to be finished, I used the balsam fir that I had collected in an old filmcontainer and it worked immediately. For not so serious burns, I use ice, lavender EO and than Desitin. I've burned my fingertips so many times that they can't get prints of them when I worked as a teacher C-M

Guest guest
There are a lot of healing butters and oils, including Helichrysum and black see oil, unrefined Shea and many others however, because of the severity of his burns please ask the doctors before using anything that could lead to more complications. Not saying that natural isn't good just that it must be used with caution in instances like this. Deep burns are dangerous. Guest guest
Dale, I also say that Emu and Lavender (preferable Bulgarian) are the best choices. I have heard some say that after a burn, they applied Lavender straight to the wound. I would not recommend this but they say it works. Guest guest
Hi Dale, some 5 years ago, my husband and I, 6 months pregnant with our son, got caught up in an gas explosion on a public market. I badly burned my hands and feet, my husband burned his face, hands and arms. We had a mix of second and third degree burns. We were taken to hospital and started on a treatment there. After one night we left, and then every day a nurse came to our house to take care of the burns. I immediately started to use lavender neat on the burns, besides the 'classical' treatment (With what I know now, I wouldn't use it neat anymore, but probably in St John' s Worth oil or aloë vera gel). Our burns healed great. I had to wear pressure clothing on my feet, but since I was pregnant, it was hard to put it on (you have to get around that big belly to get to your feet :-) )so I didn't wear it much at all. After a few weeks, the doctor commented how nice the skin healed with almost no scars. She of course thought that was due the pressure clothing, I knew it was the lavender, which I continued to put on even when I didn't wear the pressure clothing. So what I want to say: lavender is great on burns, even severe ones. Love, Saskia
