A DELICATE QUESTION

I've been silent for a while but now I need some sage advice and here I am.

I have a small soap business and we also sell lotions one of which is a spray

on, ultra-light moisturizer that is 80% comfrey, chamomile and calendula

infusion with a teensy bit of rose otto. My business got a big boost from

another

board which I won't name and that board's leder sells a blend of undiluted

essential oils for direct application to the face. Three of my customers posted

on my forum that they had broken out -- one badly enough to see a doctor --

from using the combination of our spray lotion with the undiluted essential

oils.

I've been burned (and told my story here) by the GY/YL hype so I know in my

heart that these oils should not be applied undiluted and yet I'm reticent to

slam someone, and her product, who has helped me so much. How do I go about

delicately informing my customers that this is an unsafe practice?

Thank you for your wisdom,

Jody

Hi Jody,

I'd personally contact her off list (of course) and have a friendly

discussion about this with her since she might not even have a CLUE that

what she has made is damaging product (unfortunately some folks don't).

If I were doing business with her I'd tell her that I can't sell that

item any longer as it is currently formulated as there have been

complaints from numerous customers expressing that it is causing

problems - some severe enough to warrant medical attention!

I'd also mention that its not surprising that folks have been having

these type of problems as a range of adverse reaction from dermal

application of of undiluted and under diluted Essential Oils (as well as

isolated chemical components that are in Essential Oils) is well known

and documented in the cosmetic manufacturing circle.

Point out the IFRA's web site

http://www.ifraorg.org

and Martin Watt's Plant Aromatics

http://www.av-at.com/plantaromaticsavnp.html

Knowledge of the info at both of those resources is essential for anyone

who makes anything with EO that will go on the skin (not to mention a

very smart business move, last thing anyone wants it a lawsuit because

somebody didn't do their homework!)

I'd leave it open for her to reformulate and continue to have a good

business relationship including the potential to sell the item in its

new incarnation (if its formulated properly), but I'd run like heck from

continuing to sell something that is getting that much negative response

- CYA!

Only other option I can think of if you REALLY want to continue to sell

her product in the form it is in, and save your butt and your customers'

skin ... tell them that her item is a concentrate item and it is to be

diluted to to the proper strength before use (x drops of her undiluted

concentrated blend into x amount of a carrier oil of some sort ...)

*Smile*

Chris (list mom - I just deleted over 100 SPAM mail messages (and that

is with a filter) - and now I am going to get my behind to the gym - I

didn't go for over a week and I feel sluggish and bloated ;-p BLAH)
