Hi Butch,

and thanks for your reply and welcome :) I agree, I would much rather use an EO

than a synthetic product that I have no idea what is in it and can't get the

information due to 'trade secrets'.

As I am still very 'green' to aromatherapy (and learning everyday) I have not

run across anyone that has become sensitised myself just heard of it. I do

believe it is possible and therefore would like to be fully informed before I

start 'playing'.

Thanks for the rundown on the book you mention - it sounds like a must have on

the shelf of any aromatherapists - qualified or student.

Yes I have heard of several Aussies becoming sensitised to TT Oil, and have been

told myself it is OK to use neat. But I have found that when blended with

another oil and kept at a low percentage I have had better results than straight

- so to my mind - why bother risking myself or others with undiluted EO's??

I like your analogies and humour Butch, thanks for answering.

Hi Tania,

Welcome .. fer'shur. But the risks in using natural essential oils are

one heckuva lot lower than in using synthetics. I am sensitized to Just

For Men .. not a damn thing natural in it. Man has evolved with Nature

but it was with the onslaught of synthetics that Multiple Chemical

Sensitivities became a big problem in the Western World.

Yes ma'am .. matter of fact .. but its not so much persistent inhalation

as it is persistent dermal contact. I have personal knowledge of a crap

pot full of folks who have become sensitized to this or that EO. Two of

them I know of are on this list now .. but I would rather they speak up

themselves. One had to close her business as a result of sensitization

to Lavender and now general irritation from a number of essential oils.

The other one is still in the business but can't be around Lavender.

You being from Oz I am sure you know that are many folks in Oz now who

have become sensitized to Tea Tree because many Aussies have used it

neat for years. If Dennis Archer is back from India now and has his

ears on I hope he will chime in on that one.

If you are looking for documented cases as in official documentation ..

then you need to get a copy of the Plant Aromatics Safety Manual ..

http://www.av-at.com/plantaromaticsavnp.html

Folks who mess around with EO blends without having the scientifically

documented, easy to use, desk side safety reference, Plant Aromatics,

are like the dude who drives drunk .. or maybe like someone playing

Texas Roulette by sticking his hand in a rattlesnake hole and hoping Mr.

Jake NoShoulders is out visiting his friends.

I can tell a lot about folks knowledge of safe use of EO by looking at

the postings of some of the ridiculous blend recipes on this and that

Newsgroup .. many of them are straight out of some novel and there is no

question that the person posting it has NOT used it.

I will add .. however .. that a part of your question (above) concerned

inhalation of EO .. I don't think we can find a case of anyone having

become sensitized from inhalation .. if anyone knows of one .. and I'm

not talking about John told Mary who told Suzie .. I'd like to hear it

because it would be contrary to what we think we know about EO today.

> Secondly the book you mention, sounds like a great resource tool, do you

> know if it is available in Australia, or would I have to import it in?

The Plant Aromatics Safety manual is available in two places .. Martin

Watt in the UK .. at this URL http://www.aromamedical.com/paper.html

And from Butch Owen in North and South America and the Pacific .. at

http://www.av-at.com/plantaromaticsavnp.html

The original Plant Aromatic sold for years at $75 a copy .. the revised

edition is not $44.90 .. it came out in November 2001 and is now in the

Fourth Printing. I am the publisher in America and sold distributor.

Y'all keep smiling. :-) Butch http://www.AV-AT.com

>>Then see the below post .. the three potential problems resulting from

>>dermal application of essential oils are Irritation, Sensitization and

>>Photo Sensitization. Irritation generally is local and goes away

>>shortly after the irritant is removed. Photo sensitization can be

>>avoided by not exposing the skin to sunlight for 12 or so hours after

>>dermal contact with certain EO .. not gonna go into them now .. except

>>to say that some serious damage can occur.. and the last potential

>>danger is Sensitization .. which is for life.
