Guest guest
Butch, I am new, and have some Young Living oils that were a gift from a friend....please " enlighten " me on the harm they have caused----and if I am at risk using these oils? Thanks, Lori Butch Owen [butchbsi] <snipped> We have our own bogey bear in Aromatherapy .. one we continue to feed. Its not turned on us yet because we are not a legitimate industry and we (except for some Young Living practices) have caused no harm .. But I can say that I completely looked the other way when I first heard about them. Too much " miraculous " " life-changing " " magic-bullet " " ours are the best/most potent " type hype surrounding them for my suspicious ways. I have *never* heard anyone say that the oils themselves cause harm --only that the oils are not pure or have been adulterated. I have heard about the ways in which these oils are promoted to be used and have heard people question and slam the promotion of these practices. Also heard about a lot of " miracles " that were " brought about " by using them and the YL ways of using them. Like I said... sounded too suspicious for me. Guest guest
Hey Lori Butch is talking about the company not the oils. The company is run by a major liar and conman, the oils... >shrug< who knows. Basically, whereas most honest retailers will provide you with a gc on your oils, YL never will. And they have been accused of adulteration MANY times. Your oils are prolly okay to use, just becareful of the company. It's not something one wants to get roped into. Cheers! Guest guest
Kathleen, Thanks for the info. I don't mean to sound dumb, but what is a gc? Guest guest
simply and basically put: it's a signature test on essential oils. Each oil has it's own signature and these tests can determine whether or not an oil is a fake, been fooled around with, is poor quality etc. Mind you, it's not fool proof or fail proof, clever chemists can fake oils to match the signature... Butch can tell you pages about these tests, but this is just a simple answer so as not to confuse me. ;-) Cheers! Guest guest
Hey Andrea, >>Hi y'all, >> >>Let me take you for a stroll down the path of Aromatherapy and the >>personalities of various types of Newsgroups. Thankee ma'am .. wasn't always I believed as such .. but the longer we stay above snakes the more our attitudes change. :-P > Bucking the system and all the hype, but sooooo much more depth and > understanding than someone just saying " don't neccessarily trust them > over there " . It is a message of " truly find out for yourself and do > so with some common sense. Your own common sense --not someone else's > version of it " . That's right .. but for new folks .. they gotta start at some point and trying to get the basics from any Aromatherapy List is not a good very likely .. best they pick up a couple of the better reference pubs and do some reading .. then go from there. Or .. take a course if they think they really want to learn about the safe use of essential oils. > Your viewpoints have certainly opened up mine and I am willing to look > at things differently. Good it is .. we shouldn't stop learning .. or changing our attitudes toward this and that .. till we go under. > God, gotta love this list! Best there is .. no question on that. > Chris, I am so happy to see your numbers grow like this --you > certainly do deserve it and all of the praise Butch has heaped on you! > Oh and that goes for these list-members too. Guest guest
Lordy.. saying your post was " sorta long " is like saying the Pope is " sorta Catholic " , :-) Great post, Butch, and that brings me to an important point I've pondered for a while about your posts and archived files. You need to get them out on the internet. They're either lost forever on idma (a private list with a lousy archive service), or semi-buried here in the . Even if you posted them on newsgroups, they'd be out there for eternity, with a much larger audience. You post your stuff on rosemary, oregano, hoo-ha and assorted subjects over and over on , but I think you need to go one step further. Create a non-commercial webpage and put all the stuff up there. Wouldn't take much time since the stuff is already written. You'd just have to upload it, and add to it from time to time as you include more information. I really think it's a shame that it's so " hidden " and that it would be great if somebody hit " oregano oil " on google and came up with your page. Or, if somebody visited Graham's page and found your stuff. Even if your computer crashed and ate all the stuff, it would be up there for posterity, and that's important, after all the work you put into it. http://anyamccoy.com (who agrees with a bit of what you wrote and disagrees a bit, but can't muster the energy for the life of me to wrestle with that book you just posted on AT and icons, oils and such.) Guest guest
Hi Butch, Thanks for all the info and the laughs, as usual. I'm in learning at the moment and I do simply want to learn the safe and responsible use for oils because I'm in California and I work for lawyers so I don't want people coming back and wanting to sue me. Yet, neither do I face AT or herbalism as a religion either. What's interesting is my company does mainly soap, perfumes and such because I love it and how it smells and how the aroma makes me feel. What is interesting I sent out a survey among my fellow co-workers about the beauty products they buy and why, just getting an idea on what I should invest my money into. I sent out about 20 surveys and got about 14 back and of the 14 people either didn't use any kind of beauty product at all, and they were all over the age of 50 interestingly, and the others said they didn't care if it was an essential oil or a fragrance oil just as long as the price was right, it was packaged nice and smelled good. Just in conversation with many people I meet, at health food stores, my daughter's school, and just anywhere, it strikes me that these people know very little or nothing at all about AT and the ones that knew a little knew of no oil other than lavender and chamomile oil, most just knew of fragrance oils. I've heard massage therapists tell me that they like to use orange oil as a massage ingredient and many of them have bought regular aromatherapy books, and I tell them that they should not be using orange oil in massage and when I tell them why they are stunned. I don't attack them like a Bible-toting evangelist because I understand. I have AT books in my house right now that have recipes that include the use of oils that I've learned causes sensitization. But just like anything you are going to have people who take it a step too far like in IDEM list or whatever it's called - all I can say about that list is - " reading is fundamental. " I belong to a few other specialized boards and there are always people who take the idea to the point where it is intermingled with their sense of self- worth, and fights break out, so, human nature. I will question something, but only from a standpoint where I really want to know. I prefer this board because people can talk to one another even if they don't agree. I don't care if someone gets passionate about something because in writing, it is easy to misunderstand a person's tone of voice. I just don't like when it erupts into name calling, blatant rudeness and people not knowing what the hell they are talking about or haven't bothered to read what you wrote. Let us all know what you think of this. As usual I am probably way too late in reading this and getting my response out. Barbara
