Guest guest
Hi there Sandi, This is more of a personal opinion/story vs. a professional- it is based on my experience. I am quite small framed and delivered a 8 lb 14 oz baby , 21.5 inches long in August. I had planned an all natural birth but ended up at the hospital with a vacuum suction delivery. From the beginning I was told that I was narrow and might have difficulties (not from my midwife but everyone else). My midwife says there are plenty of people my size that deliver big babies. Anyway, just be careful if she is overdue- that is what happened to me, by almost two weeks. By that time his head had hardened too much and I could not get it past my pelvic bone on my own. Almost had a C-Section. Anyway, this is no reason to induce just make sure she delivers in a squatting position or on all fours (that is what I was told) it will open up the delivery canal by over an inch. It is a much more natural way to have birth. Tell your friend good luck and make sure she is doing her squats daily! Guest guest
Actually, if you could post replies to the group on this, it would be most helpful to me, too! I am overdue, small-framed, and they tell me baby is already pushing 8 lb., and they gain about 1/2 lb. a week, so I am ready to meet my little one! I plan on trying acupuncture this week, have heard great things about it for getting labor started, but I am having trouble getting an appointment. I have tried EPO and NSP's 5W herbal blend, but I ended up with a stomachache instead of contractions, so I figured it is not what my body wants. I walk every day, practice yoga and squats, stimulate acupressure points, and nothing. Little guy is too comfy in there, I think! :-) Thanks, Debbie deb Baby products on sale this month, in honor of our impending arrival! http://www.debrasrhapsody.com/rhapsody/specials.php - <avos3857 Monday, November 15, 2004 11:35 PM Re: help baby come quicker > > Hello All > > I have a friend who is due and she is quite small and her baby is big, and > her belly also is quite big so , does anyone have any ideas/suggestions to help > the baby come quicker, any exercises or even any antidotal thing you might > have heard of??? > You can send to me off line if you wish. > > thanks > sandi > > >

Guest guest
Debbie & Sandi, My baby was a ten month baby! http://www.birthlove.com/free/ten_month_mama.html This site is not mine, but it is beautiful regarding longer pregnancies. And then there is always the chance for the mis~calculation of the due date. My doctor " warned " me that if I didn't have my baby within a week she would be ten pounds! Also, that if I didn't go into labor within three days I would have to be induced, as I was all ready three weeks past my " due " date. Just a little bit of psychological manipulation, eh? My little girl was born that week (without induction) and was 7lbs. 11ozs. Google " ten month babies " there is a good bit of info out there on it. Have a beautiful birth! Guest guest
While I agree with Chris here, (most babies are just fine if allowed to progress on their own and not rushed), it isn’t always the case. I have wide hips but a flat pelvis. My first was 8 lbs 13 oz. I pushed for 3 hours and he still wasn’t coming out. He ended up being a forceps delivery. My next three babies were no problem as the largest was 7 lbs 13 ounces. While I agree that I’m definitely not the norm, my condition isn’t that uncommon either. Now, having said that, I know of a lady whose pregnancies were 10 months (all 7 of them). And she isn’t large either. Her babies were on the large side but still normal. While I understand how the last month, and especially the last week of pregnancy is. My suggestion is don’t rush it. Oh, and a side note… I have never known a doctor to be right when he says how much a baby weighs in-utero. One lady I know was told 10 pounds minimum and her baby was 7 ½ pounds. So, take courage and just worry about preparing yourself for the birth; kegels, breathing exercise ect. Guest guest
I tried my best to have a normal delivery, but I spent 20 hours of labor after having my water broke, I'm 5'1 and I just wouldn't dilate. Even after 20 hours, I was still only like 6 and her heart rate dropped dangerously so I had to have a C-Section. When they pulled her out, her head was still perfectly round so she hadn't even dropped down in the birth canal. I have a very narrow pelvis. Guest guest
Hi Sandi, Just a question - the friend is " quite small " with a " big baby " - by whose standards? I can give you a bit of in sight to " small " women and " big " babies (the thing that absolutely blew my theory) was the Vietnamese lady who weighed a whopping 95 lbs. nine months pregnant, just over 4 feet tall, and had AN ELEVEN POUND baby - vaginally. No tears, no stitches. I think the midwife was in shock! LOL If her care provider is a doctor, he / she is setting this lady up for failure and a surgical birth... Babies come when they are supposed to. Forcing them to come early is harmful. But of course, that is just my .02. Jill Mc. Guest guest
Hi Karen - The key here is being allowed time for your body to show that there may be a problem....not telling mom there is a problem before having any real evidence of it. Three hours of pushing in a natural birth is not uncommon. It is very common to have a difficult second stage in a labor involving pain meds. Guest guest
Hi Jill! I find this thread very interesting! I don't have children myself, but I'm a medical transcriptionist and I can't tell you how many C-sections I type over the course of a week! And I do a variety of notes, not just Op notes, so you can just imagine how many actually take place! Oyyy! Anyhow, I understand what you're saying about not forcing babies to come early, but what about those who exhibit meconium staining? In that case, wouldn't there be the danger of aspiration? It has been my observation, and just a layman's observation because I'm NOT a doctor, but I notice that more women get whisked off to the OR for C-sections because of fetal heart decelerations after they've been given Pitocin. It's almost a given. I'm thinking that the Pitocin has A LOT to do with fetal heart decels, arrest of dilatation and arrest of descent and I'm thinking maybe anesthetics play a role too. Just my observations. :-) Kelly - " Jill McDanal " <birthmamajill Tuesday, November 16, 2004 8:11 PM Re: help baby come quicker > > > Hi Sandi, > > Just a question - the friend is " quite small " with a " big baby " - by whose > standards? > > I can give you a bit of in sight to " small " women and " big " babies (the > thing that absolutely blew my theory) was the Vietnamese lady who weighed > a whopping 95 lbs. nine months pregnant, just over 4 feet tall, and had AN > ELEVEN POUND baby - vaginally. Guest guest
Oh my gosh Kelly!! What Jill and I wouldn't do to show our clients REAL transcriptions telling them what we have termed 'train wrecks waiting to happen.' Don't worry. We'd never ask you to compromise your professionalism. This is just a 'yeah it's out there and marked confidential so women can't ever compare their records with other women.' I'll let Jill respond re: meconium Kelly, for a layperson you're a genius. Actually you are a Thinking Woman (Henci Goer). Your simple observations are truths. There is back-up in medical journals everywhere but the medical world will not give up their interventions for many reasons - all of them cloaked behind the Cover Your Ass mentality. If you've never seen it you should check your public television programming for a documentary called Born In The USA. Imagine if women requested their transcripts and got together in a huge group and compared and drew their own conclusions???? Guest guest
Sorry to be so delayed in answering ya'll. So goes life you know! RE (from Kelly) " Anyhow, I understand what you're saying about not forcing babies to come early, but what about those who exhibit meconium staining? In that case, wouldn't there be the danger of aspiration Meconium aspiration means that the baby INHALES the meconium stained fluid. Most babies do NOT inhale contaminated fluid. There has been at least one study that I know of done on a lamb that was " test tube " grown. (It has been years, and my other computer burned up last year, so don't quote me on this!) This lamb's amniotic fluid was " contaminated " with 2 substances. The first one was a dextrose (sugar) base. During this session, the lamb made MORE breathing movements as observed by scientests. Later the lamb's amniotic fluid was contaiminated with vinegar (I don't remember the strength or what kind). During the vinegar infusion the lamb's breathing movements were found not at all. Meconium also has very different variations. Green mec. is a sign of an older problem - several months or days before birth. It may be particulate (have chunks) or not. Brown mec. which is probably seen most often in LOW RISK women who have low risk pregnancies - happens near term, usually because of a cord problem, being rammed into the pelvic brim, gross mishandling of the baby/cord at birth, and more often with the use of pit or some other drug. Rust colored mec is the death knell. You see it when babe has passed or is passing. Babies generally " know " when the amniotic fluid is contaminated and will not make breathing efforts, swallowing, of course is a whole nother issue. Meconium is actually clean. Babies are not born with the necessary gut flora to digest breastmilk or substitutes. That is why we see babies who are terribly constipated especially when they are NOT breastfed. We also see more digestive problems - ie reflux, projectile vomiting, GERD, etc. With pitocin, the uterus contracts very strongly and may actually cause meconium to be released and stains the fluid and could possibly lead to meconium aspiration syndrome. But this is just my not so HO, but if the docs would lay off the pit and the other drugs in labor we would see a LOT less problems in general. Also most hospitals and doctors do not differientiate between aspiration and SWALLOWING. Thus necessitates deep suctioning with DeLee eventhough nnr (neonatal resusciatation) protocols explicitly state that babies who HAVE meconium and ARE VIGOROUS DO NOT NEED SUCTIONING. Pity the docs cannot read. Now attending mothers at home with meconium - I have done it. I have done it with green particulate meconium. Mom was 10 and pushing, water breaks, OMG GREEN MEC!, kiddo is born 2 pushes later, she is fine and vigorous and breathing well. Babies expel over 100 mL of fluid out of their lungs and throat at birth with an intact perineum. My personal theory is that mec. aspiration happens BECAUSE some jackass is trying to vigorously suction a baby that doesn't really need it. (Usually Nurse Rachet and Dr. Do Little.) Another theory of mine, of course off the record and with no documentation, but just a theory, the problem with mec. aspiration is not that the baby inhaled some, but that it interferes with the surfactant function in the lungs. Surfactant is what the lungs rely on to expand. When it is coated in excessive mucous or meconium, it cannot do its job. Plus I think it gives a space for certain germs to cling to and a medium to grow in. Now there are no absolutes in birth, never say never or always, it is possible that mec. aspiration will lead to a very serious condition called RDS - Respiratory Distress Syndrome or Hyaline Membrane Disease, but typically, it is not seen even with meconium stained babies in HEALTHY LOW RISK POPULATIONS. Now if mom has GBS (Group B Strep) or has an STD or has some sort of infection - amnitis (spelling, sorry, no book in my reach that would give me the right one), choriamnitis, or a uterine infection, she is at risk of passing that on to her babe. In those situations, as well as Cesarean Sugery, it may be necessary to suction babies so that they may breathe with as little effort as possible. And I totally agree - pit, more often than not, contributes heavily to the sugical birth rate. Especailly here. Some docs have as high as a 50% surgical rate! You'd better ask before you decide to drop that kid anywhere else but home! LOL Jill Mc. Alabama
Guest guest
Jill, Thank you for all your comments! Wow! I bet you and Dale and I could have some lively conversations! LOL This is all such great info to know because as you know, the medical professionals would never share any light on this. I've often thought their methods and treatments cause more problems (with most everything in medicine, not just childbirth) and this just helps to confirm my suspicions. I've done medical transcription for 18+ years and I've seen a lot of trends....a lot of SCARY trends, unfortunately. :-( Again, thanks for sharing this!
