Our Shea Butters are Certified Grade A and Organic. We do not offer Ultra

Refined Butters and consider them to be inferior for the purpose of making high

quality handmade soaps and toiletries. The more refining that is done, the more

nutrient value is lost.

The first step is done by the women in Africa in the middle of the forest. The

Shea seeds require four to six months to mature and when ripe they become a

rather hard berry with thin, brown and wrinkled skin enclosing a single seed,

embedded in a sweet pulp. The fruit after harvesting is dried, then capel and

husk are roughly removed and the kernel is pounded into a sweet pulp. It is

mixed with water and boiled until the melted butter comes to the surface and it

is skimmed off. Also many impurities are so skimmed, like leaves, twigs, husks,

water etc.

In this phase we are sure that no solvents are used, because it is not an

industrial extraction, but using an artisan method in the middle of an African

forest village, where they do not even know what a solvent is. The product is

packed in random packaging, like different types of drums or in plastic bags.

At this point the Shea has much characteristic color and odor. This is our Raw

Shea and the one with the most nutrient value for skin and hair but also the one

with the most odor and color. Our Unrefined Shea is the same as the Raw only it

has been filtered to remove sediment but still has much color and odor as well

as most nutrient value.

PURIFICATION

The Raw Unrefined Shea is receive at the refining plant in Europe. The first

step is the so called Purification, that consists of getting rid of impurities

like leaves, twigs, husks, water etc.: the butter is melted and mixed with water

and salt (NaCl), that are adsorbed by the impurities and precipitate. Then the

physical separation of impurities and the fat occurs.

DECOLORATION

The Shea butter coming from the purification step is gray/green and it is

decolorized by percolation through decolorizing earths (diatomaceous earths) and

press filtered. In this step Shea butter is decolorized and dehydrated too.

DEODORIZATION

This is the last step of Refined Shea butter production and it includes

deodorization and deacidification: the butter is brought at 200 °C under vacuum.

In this way the odors disappear and the vacuum avoids oxidation and

acidification.

After this step the product is cooled down and packed. In the meantime it is

insuffled with Nitrogen, that avoids peroxides and acidity increase. This is

our Gently Refined Shea and our #1 Best Selling Shea. Our Extra White Shea has

all color removed and is very white but not ultra refined
