Guest guest
This is a delicate and often disturbing topic for a lot of people. I myself have been through some really awful treatment at the hands of " professionals " . The sad fact is that messing around with brain chemistry is such an extremely complicated thing. I have met only one p-doc that freely admitted that. The rest hand out pills and when the patient doesn't get better then they are to blame. It is interesting to note that just recently that many of the SSRI drugs have come under fire for causing possible suicidal thoughts/actions in teenagers. It is not just teenagers that are suffering from these feelings--many people that have manic-depression cannot tolerate anti-depressants and experience hypomania, mania, or mixed states when placed on these drugs. I found that out the very, very hard way for several years and then it finally dawned on them that these medications were augmenting my problems. I wonder if some of these awful feelings for teens come from being labeled (mental illness/condition is such a stigma even now) and 'needing' to bel placed on these medications. People will have an idea of what is going on when they find out that someone is on Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, etc., or I should say, they will think they have an idea of what is going on. In reality, they only see one dot in the mural. I think that SOME of these drugs have their place. As much as I hate it, I would have severe difficulty functioning without some of them. But, it took education on my part and a lot of assertiveness to place a limit on how much and even what type of drug. Many medications for manic-depression that were believed to be effective are proving to be no more effective than placebos. Now, why didn't they know that before the FDA approved it?? C-M, I was very saddened to hear about the loss of your son. I wish there could have been some other way, some else could have been done...anything but what happened. It is obvious that you loved and still love him very much. Drae
