Guest guest
Dear Aromatherapy folks, I purchased two DVD's made in France . They are about the lavender fields of Provence and distillation there. Neither will work on my DVD machine here in California. I tried it on another machine here and it still does not play. Do any of you know how to make them play on my machine in California. One of them was played by the sender in Chicago and it worked there. Guest guest
I don't know about France, but in the UK they have a completely different format, even for DVD's. Even the kids' games are different! The person in Chicago must have had a different kind of player. Other than taking it to a professional to have it converted, I don't know what you would do. I would try that first, but it will cost you...... hth, Cindy - Dear Aromatherapy folks, I purchased two DVD's made in France . They are about the lavender fields of Provence and distillation there. Guest guest
Hi Jan Well... finally something I can partially answer! I don't know if you will find a professional to " convert " it. The information is stored on the DVD the exact same way in every country - but they protect them with a " zone " code. It's a pain. In fact, the globe has been split up into " zones " by the movie business - the US (North America??) being " zone 1 " , Europe is " Zone 2 " , I believe. I think this is to prevent movie theaters from buying the DVD in the US and showing it on their screens in other countries (and avoiding all the distribution costs). Perhaps it is also to prevent people from buying their DVDs in other countries, but that seems stupid (not very " free trade " ). These days, however, many (most?) DVD players either are already " de-zoned " or can be. I live in France, and our DVD player came with manufacturers instructions on how to de- zone it. Your sender in Chicago probably had a DVD player that was already de-zoned. (And by the way... they should be completely aware of the " zoning " issue if they are selling DVDs from France in the US! How odd that they didn't warn you?!) We have also de-zoned a DVD player that we bought in the US, so it would play French DVDs (exactly what you want to do!). I don't know if it is 100% legal, but I believe it is. If you are not doing it for personal gain, then it should be? At any rate... you can make your own decision. On the web, if you put in " de-zone dvd player " and the brand and model number of your dvd player, you should be able to find the sequence of commands that will de-zone it, especially if it is a relatively old one. I don't know if they are all " de-zonable " , but we have de-zoned two. Ask a 14 year old computer nerd neighbor... they seem to know everything and there seems to be one on every block! He or she will do it so easily, it's humbling... Hope that helps! Anne , Oaklandplants@a... wrote: > Dear Aromatherapy folks, I purchased two DVD's made in France . Guest guest
(And by the way... they should be completely aware of the " zoning " issue if they are selling DVDs from France in the US! How odd that they didn't warn you?!) Hi everybody - I'm back from a week in Chicago - had a really good time - it's a great city. Anyway, about the DVD .... I'm an aromatherapist not a DVD producer! I just happen to have written a film about lavender essential oil production in France as it's one of my specialities. I sold this DVD to Jan in good faith having tried it out on my friend's machine in Chicago before I sent it to her. I was assured by the 'nerd' who is copying them for me that it didn't have any reason not to work in the US and was completely reassured when it played perfectly on my friend's machine. I don't know what more I could have done! I will wait to see whether Jan manages to 'de-zone' her machine (it's all news to me) and will of course refund the cost of the DVD if she cannot get it to work. Like my essential oils and other bits and pieces, we are not talking about mass production by the Disney studios here! This is speciality 'niche' stuff! Best wishes Jane - anne78000 Monday, November 08, 2004 8:48 PM Re: DVD doesn't work in California Hi Jan Well... finally something I can partially answer! I wonder if these 2 items are more " universal " than a regular dvd player. anyhow, please let me know the price of the dvd and how to get one, then if this playing problem works itself out..i might have to get one! hugs~Nessy Saylor in Florida [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
