Guest guest
I want to try making liquid soap today but both recipes I have call for Sunflower Seed Oil as the main oil. I don't have any of that and I wonder if anyone knows of an oil I could substitute?? Thanks, Juliet
Guest guest
Hi Juliet, Be sure to run any recipe (even one given to you) through a lye calculator ... That being said - you can use soy oil, canola oil, olive oil, castor oil, coconut oil .. just to name a few. Just don't use too much coconut oil in your recipe if you use it at all - I'd say less than half your recipe. The reason I say that is yes it'll help your soap suds, but it is a bit drying due to the fact that it cleans SO efficiently and since liquid soap isn't superfatted like bar soap that property can be very noticeable. Also, it can give weird results, like give you what resembles more of a block of M & P than concentrated liquid soap paste which should be more similar to the consistency of Vaseline. In general, I like to use what are considered " softer " oils for making liquid soap. *Smile* Chris (list mom) Rose Absolute Co-op One Week Only - Don't Miss Out http://www.alittleolfactory.com bartmom4 [bartclan] I want to try making liquid soap today but both recipes I have call for Sunflower Seed Oil as the main oil. Guest guest
Thanks a bunch Chris. We'll give it a shot and see what happens. It sure is nice to have knowledgable soapers to learn from! Juliet
Guest guest
I make my LS just like I make HP bar soaps. In the oven! Works every time and a lot less " hands on " in my opinion. After making many batches, you get to know the " feel " and how to remedy any problems you might detect. -Helen > > This is based on the Catherine Failor method (although I use my crock pot > > instead of actually cooking anything on the stove.) > > Olive oil 33 oz > > Castor oil 10 oz > > Coconut oil 5 oz > > Lye 9.31 oz > > 1lb 2 oz water. >
Guest guest
That's wonderful... I like watching the cook that's why I do it in my crock pot... I do my HP bars in my crock pot too... for the same reason.. I think it's because I'm a control freak and I have to watch and make sure that I'm doing it right...LOL.. Eventually when we get my meds right I may be able to do it that way..LOL.. Jennifer I make my LS just like I make HP bar soaps. In the oven!
