OT: Anyone Here Own or Run a Nonprofit?

Hi, there,

I am thinking about starting a nonprofit business (placing unwanted

pets with seniors and helping them care for their pets organically and

so on...eventually, I would like to hire a couple of persons)....I

have been considering this for quite awhile and am wondering if anyone

here knows anything about the tax issue. Do nonprofits pay taxes?

Also, any websites online where I can find my information on beginning

and running a nonprofit?

Thank you,

What a great idea!!! Just want you to know I TOTALLY support this effort. I

know nothing about nonprofits, I'm guessing there may be some issues based

on the state you live in ... just because I've seen that kind of thing

mentioned on other lists.

Though I know nothing, this looks like a good place to start ...

Hi, AiMeE,

If you Google 'non-profit' you will get many different sites that will tell

you how to set up a non-profit or not-for-profit organization. As mentioned

before, what state you are in is important. You can also get information

from the IRS site. Some types of non-profit organizations are tax exempt,

others not. I would suggest getting the advise of an accountant to find out

what would work best for you.

Hi AiMeE,

I personally don't know much about non-profits, but my husband is a

business consultant and he suggests you go to:

http://www.guidestar.org It's the national database for non-profit

organizations.

Also, a google search under " how to start a non-profit organization "

will give you over a million options to choose from!

Great idea! Much success to you,

Michelle
