Guest guest Posted November 2, 2004 Report Share Posted November 2, 2004 I'm pretty sure I saw Red Yeast Rice about 6 - 9 months ago at the Vitamin Cottage and under their label. How much is suggested to lower ones cholesterol? That brings up another question I've always wondered about. How do we know what we are really getting with supplements? You can buy vitamin C at Wal Mart or the Kroger's or at a health food store, all say 100 mg and are all different prices. I think it was Consumers Report that showed that just because it says 100 mg it might not really be that. So how do we know what we are getting? Is one brand better than another? So many questions! Technically, it's illegal to sell red yeast rice extract in the U.S., although it has a proven track record of effectively and naturally lowering cholesterol. I have no idea why it's still available here, since stocking it is an open invitation for the FDA to come down on your head. Dr Andrew Weil (a big supporter of red yeast rice) suggests that you order the extract via a Canadian health food store or pharmacy, where it is not banned. Octacosanol is a policosanol of eight alcohols derived from sugar cane wax. It is considered as effective as red yeast rice extract. Other cholesterol lowering nutrients are: cordyceps, apple pectin, shiitake, garlic, chromium, fiber, EFA's, soy lecithin, artichoke leaf, Ho she wou, green tea, guggul, skullcap and ginger. Not all supplements are created equal, that's for sure! Always be sure to read the fine print under " other ingredients " . This is where you'll find the fillers, etc. There are other things to consider as well, but more involved.
