Guest guest
I have a lot of canola oil that I'd like to use in a recipe for soap - anychance anyone might have something with this as the main ingredient? I have a hard time figuring out how to switch oils.... I also have: sweet almond oil, jojoba, coconut and shea - if I could use some of those that would be great too - unless one of you really smart ladies would let me in on the secret of switching oils :-) thanks! Guest guest
Hi Pam, Canola oil on its own would produce a soft bar with a light lather - so you don't want to use it a the majority oil in your soap - but you certainly can use it! It is pretty similar in properties to soy bean oil actually, and can be used in liquid soap making, no doubt. I don't have an exact recipe to give you, but I'd say blending it with coconut oil, palm oil and olive oil should give you a nice bar of soap - maybe with the canola at about 20% of the oils should give you a nice bar of soap ... if making liquid soap you can use a higher % of it I'd say play around with those oils you want to use on a lye calculator, like the one at http://www.the-sage.com or http://www.tlcsoaps.com/tlcsoapcalc.htm Rita also has an oils property chart on her site ... that is really the key ... find the properties you want in your soap, see what the various oils have to offer and then go from there! http://www.tlcsoaps.com/oilsapval.htm Happy soaping! *Smile* Chris (list mom) LAST WEEK - On Sale Virgin Red Palm Oil & Brown Muscovado Sugar <http://www.alittleolfactory.com/> http://www.alittleolfactory.com Pam [pam] I have a lot of canola oil that I'd like to use in a recipe for soap - anychance anyone might have something with this as the main ingredient? Guest guest
Pam, The only soap I ever made with Canola oil in the recipe is this Bee Good Soap that I found on the MMS website " Created By: Sharon Predoehl (s_predoehl) Date : 1997-11-01 Ingredients: 16 oz wt Sweet Almond Oil 26 oz wt Canola Oil 32 oz wt Coconut Oil 28 oz wt Olive Oil 26 oz wt Hydrogenated Soybean Oil 48 fl oz Water 18 oz wt Lye (sodium hydroxide) 4 oz wt Beeswax (.5 oz per pound x 8 lbs.) 4 oz wt Honey (.5 oz per pound x 8 lbs.) Instructions: Heat oils to 150° F. Add Beeswax (you can grate it, chunk it, pre- melt it). Cool to 115° F. Lye and water to about 110° F. Add lye/water to oils, at light trace, add the honey. Stir till well blended. Pour no more than an inch deep. Cover with Saran type wrap prevents soda ash). Don't wrap with a blanket, just put a cookie sheet over the top, as this will get warmer than soaps without honey. Notes & Comments: This is the soap that is most popular with the folks who get my soaps. One person says he thinks it helps him with his body odor. He said it, I didn't! You can scent this as you like, add scents at light trace. " I really like this recipe. It makes a really nice bar of soap.
