Guest guest
Greetings! I tried some high-quality shea butter in a cream I made for my son and he has broken out from it. This cream also has aloe vera gel in it. I'm not sure if it's the shea butter or the aloe gel. What can I substitute these with? I'm going to try subbing one at a time to see which one is causing a problem. There's no fragrance or other eo's in it--just distilled H2O and grapeseed oil. Thanks in advance to all. Guest guest
I'd suggest it's the Grapeseed oil - gives me bumps under the skin every time I have it used on me in massage (I think that's what you call 'breaking out'). I don't trust it as a product - I mean just how much oil/fatty acids does a grape seed contain?? I heard it was invented as a 'good' use for wine waste material, involves high heat to extract and the end result is a thick black tar which is then diluted with something to produce the light green 'oil'. Don't touch the stuff anymore personally! Jane - Andrea Jones Saturday, October 23, 2004 12:18 AM Re: Substituting Shea Butter And/Or Aloe Gel Greetings! Guest guest
Try subbing Mango Butter for Shea. Don't have an answer for the Aloe Vera Gel though. Was the Gel from Walmart or was it 100% Pure? Some of the Walmart stuff they sell as Gel has additives in it. Does your son get a reaction to rubber gloves or any other latex product? If so, he may be allergic to the shea, cause as Sharon stated, it contains a natural latex...minute as I understand it, but there nevertheless. Guest guest
Sounds like the grapeseed oil - as I suspected. Does anyone else have any experience of bad reactions to grapeseed? I met someone else recently who says it gives her spots when she's massaged with it ... Jane - Andrea Jones Tuesday, October 26, 2004 6:50 PM Re: Re: Substituting Shea Butter And/Or Aloe Gel I need to hire a detective!! I never thought about the grapeseed oil even though I considered the aloe. He might have broken out not because of the bananas I ate but because I mixed some grapeseed oil w/ some other cream I had and broke out from that. His aunt is a nurse and has a very bad latex allergy...I will keep investigating. - s-Bradley 10/23/04 11:01:35 PM Re: Re: Substituting Shea Butter And/Or Aloe Gel it is very rare that shea butter will break you out only if you are alleric to latex which natural in shea butter I have children with eczmea use my shea with great results sharon it may be the aloe gel
Guest guest
He well might have a latex allergy--he broke out terribly after I ate some bananas (he's getting mama's milk)--really surprised me. There wasn't anything new I had eaten (but that doesn't mean it couldn't be something he hadn't reacted to before). But then, I didn't feel so good after eating them myself...was trying to be healthy by getting some K+ for cramps in my legs and feet. I still have some more questions if everyone will bear with me. --Is mango butter usually refined? Can anyone point me toward a good source of it? --Does cosmetic grade borax usually bother people with sensitive skin? Thanks so much!! Guest guest
Jane, Just my two cents here.... I use grapeseed oil all the time, and I am allergic to almost EVERYTHING. Don't have a problem with it.....maybe it's the way your oil was processed??? I have a minor allergy to some latex products, but I don't have a problem with shea butter either. <shrug> I guess it's just a game of roulette......sometimes you hit and sometimes you miss. Just keep a good journal of what is used, and any reactions that occur. This way you find out what the likely culprit is. Hope you work it all out!
