Hi all,

A friend just called me wanting to know if I had heard of " Bittersweet " ? I

did a quick search on it, and I did find 1 link from Michigan. We are in

OK......so I'm not sure if it can even be purchased here. Is there another

name that it goes by?

Hi Chris,

I am also from MI, and as far as I know, it's a protected plant which should

not be wild crafted. We do have a tiny amount growing across the road from us

that I keep hoping will spread, but it must be a very slow grower:{ It hasn't

done much in the 16 years since I first noticed it.

In my Culpeper's Herbal, Bitter Sweet is the common name for Solanum dulcamara

or Mortal or Woody Nightshade or Felon-wort. We see it growing all over

hedgerows here - it winds around bushes and has pretty pointy purple flowers and

bright red berries which are toxic. It is a narcotic, diuretic, expectorant and

depurative. With overdose it paralyses the central nervous system. The twigs and

bark were an official medicine in the UK until 1907 - used for skin and kidney

diseases. Jane

Orange Bittersweet is a parasite that twines itself around trees and

chokes them out. Often makes for the beautiful 'corkscrew' effect one

can see on a soft wood tree like poplar. Bittersweet is highly sought

after for fall arrangements, for it has such spectacular design and

color, that will stay.

It's poisonous..
