Guest guest
Aloha! I'd love to turn my Gardenia, Plumeria, Pikake, Coconut, Pineapple, Vanilla, Tuberose, Vanilla and Orchid into Hydrosol. What preservative is best? Any additional tips? Anyone can suggest best place to purchase still? Aloha Nui Loa, Barbra
Guest guest
As far as I'm concerned hydrosols don't contain preservatives. They're just distilled plant material and the levels of essential oil present in the end result act as the preservative. They don't keep all that long if they don't have much essential oil in. However, I don't know most of the plants you mention - they're not common here in the UK as hydrosols - so I don't know what levels of essential oil would be produced. When you say coconut and pineapple - do you mean the blossoms?? Sounds intriguing. Jane - kauaibarbra Friday, October 22, 2004 1:50 AM Preservatives for Hydrosols Aloha! Guest guest
We purchased our still from www.copperstills.com and have been very happy. Others I know have gotten a nice, glass tabletop model from ebay, and are happy with it. It kind of depends on the volume of plant material you have to deal with - ounces, or pounds. The Aromatic Plant Project has some information about preservatives (specifically, why they say you don't need them) on their website - aromaticplantproject.com. I'd highly recommend Suzanne Catty's Book " Hydrosols - the Next Aromatherapy " . Last but not least there is a - homehydrosols - that has some information about home distilling, and archived pictures of different stills. I have a friend that made his own from a pressure cooker and some copper tubing so if you are handy, that sort of thing is possible. have fun! -maggie www.prairielandhebs.com , " kauaibarbra " <kauaibarbra> wrote: > > > Aloha! > > I'd love to turn my Gardenia, Plumeria, Pikake, Coconut, Pineapple, > Vanilla, Tuberose, Vanilla and Orchid into Hydrosol. > > What preservative is best? > > Any additional tips? > > Anyone can suggest best place to purchase still? > > Aloha Nui Loa, > Barbra
