Guest guest
Welcome back to the group and please stay safe (new job) Rita Butch Owen <butchbsi wrote: Howdy y'all, I'm back .. come back on the list today cause Chris said if I didn't she was gonna start a rumor that I was too busy working for John Kerry's election. But I mailed my Absentee Ballot last Thursday and them whut know me understand whose name was on it. ;-) Got back from my nice 60 + day trip to the USA a couple of weeks ago .. but have been laying low on the lists .. trying to catch up with events here in Turkey and arrange a few things to keep life interesting in some other places. :-) Arrived in Turkey at 1:00 in the morning. More than 9 hours late cause Lufthansa screwed up EVERY flight out of Germany and had to rebook EVERY passenger .. and with a tooth filling out .. and came into the apartment to find water on the kitchen tile floor from a small crack in the pipe. Found a wardrobe that had a busted hanger bar and the clothes spilled out the door of it .. then started my PC and it burned up the electric receiver unit within 15 minutes of starting up. ;-) Wanted to get a jump on getting back into the time schedule, plus I missed my buddies and wanted to catch up on the news, so that night I went to Papsi Pub and had a few .. came home around 2 and then decided to go out and eat soup. Tired I was so I shut the door with the keys on the inside and no locksmith available at that hour and too late to call the gal who has a set of them cause she lives with her parents and the door was so firm that kicks wouldn't break the locking device so I went to a hotel and had to have the lock replaced the next morning. The next day I didn't move from the place. Just sat around with my gun nearby cause there were darn sure some demons working on my butt. ;-) The following day I had the lock replaced for around $26, the motor replaced for around $40 .. the filling replaced for around $23 .. new hanger bars placed in both my wardrobes for less than $10 .. and the plumber charged me around $8 to repair to the pipe. There are some advantages to living here. ;-) As usual, the trip to America was nice .. outran storms in Charleston and Texas .. managed to avoid scorpions and rattlesnakes in the Gila Wilderness of New Mexico, and got a chance to meet with Chris and her family and with Anita Reeves and Georgia Sabourin while in Houston .. Howdy ladies. :-) Actually, I would have left Charleston when I did even if the wind was not blowing because they were running out of shrimp, oysters and soft shell crabs. But I caught up on the shrimp and oysters as I traveled across the Southern half (the part Gawd lives in) of the USA. Covered a total of 16 states and a bit over 8,000 miles without being stopped for speeding. ;-) Gained around 8 pounds prior to hitting the mountains of New Mexico .. y'all just got too much delicious food and the prices are too low in the USA .. and the servings .. one of those Grandpappy breakfasts at Cracker Barrel will feed me for two days when I am eating normal. And the buffets .. everywhere buffets .. all you can eat, etc., and when I am into Suthran food like I sought out during my travels .. all I can eat is a whole bunch. Fried applies, baking powder biscuits and cornbread, redeye and sawmill gravy, sugar cured ham, grits, black eye peas, collard greens, smashed and sweet taters, fried okra and green maters, fried catfeesh and hush puppies, barbecue pork ribs and shoulders .. Lawdy Lawdy what a way to go. Whilst in Taxus .. Chris and her family, Anita, Georgia and I went to lunch .. and I had alligator tail. Good it was too. After spending 12 days in NM and climbing for hours up 6%-8% grades to get to the Gila Cliff Dwellings, Whitewater Canyon (sometimes called the Catwalk) and a few other of the many nice sites in that area of the Continental Divide (all above 7,000 feet) I lost that weight. Then after leaving NM and traveling back across the Suthran USA, I gained it again .. and now I am on a Fat Boy Diet .. and it is working. ;-) The mountains of New Mexico are always nice to visit. Gotta be the most beautiful and wild stone structures a person can find .. and I have lots of photos on disk .. which one of these days soon will be on a site. I lie not when I say one can find many faces staring out from some of the canyon walls .. this is not just my idea .. folks here who have seen the photos have picked them out without my assistance. They are, to the native folks around there, holy places. My buddy and I camped out, fished canyon streams and ate what we caught, rode ATVs into areas where only an ATV or a tank could get into .. went north to Gallup, NM and visited with the Zuni, Navaho and Apache tribes. I have a buddy in Gallup .. a Vietnam vet (Navaho) who is disabled due to a helicopter crash that broke his back .. walks with a stick and his head down toward the ground .. but he still works. And he is a REAL Shaman; not one of those, " Come into my sweat lodge .. get your tickets right here " , type fellers. We had some long talks about Native American Spiritualism .. which some of you know I try to adhere to .. gave him a bunch of EO and he gave me a bunch of recipes. Next year he is going to allow me to visit some of the actual ceremonies .. not the ones that the tourists visit. Wish they didn't serve Red or Green Chili Peppers with breakfasts in NM but that is sorta like not putting grits on the plate down home. ;-) Visited my wholesale/retail company in Friendsville, MD for a couple of weeks .. my old hometown of Guthrie, KY .. friends in Atlanta and walked my daughter to the marriage alter for the second (and last) time in Atlanta. ;-) Visited an old military buddy in Willis, TX .. north of Houston .. and almost bought a retirement home there on Arrowhead Lake, pretty close to Lake Conroe. Nice it was .. house with empty lots on both sides and a back deck maybe 40 feet from the lake .. had its own dock, etc. Twas a bid and another feller beat me out by 15K. :-( Tried again to find a place to settle in the TN-KY area but nobody wants to sell 10-15 acres .. there are plenty of 80-100 acre farms and lots of houses in the small cities but I am looking for undeveloped, forested land where I can do my own thing. Next trip .. in July .. I am going to look around the Paris, TN area .. and maybe a few miles away from the area called Land Between the Lakes. While I was in the USA I received an e-mail offering me a position as advisor/consultant for the development of a Rosa damascena project in Afghanistan .. sorta a substitute crop for opium poppies, which will eventually take some of the power away from the War Lords. Told them I would address it when I returned .. which I have .. and today I got word that my proposal was accepted and a contract would be cut by the Asian Development Bank out of Manila .. with me working for an Afghan American in Kabul who is now a Deputy Foreign Minister .. the project is a couple of hours outside Kabul .. and I get to wear one of those funny but nice little Afghan hats. ;-) Looking forward to this I am because life has lately become a bit boring for me and no matter how fast I run, the dang boredom soon catches up with me. Have another offer for a similar project in Ecuador .. might take it too if the time schedule does not conflict with this one .. still waiting for information from the folks there. Anyway .. I am back .. wanna thank all the good folks who continued to order from Appalachian Valley Natural Products while I was in a travel status .. and though I doubt if I'll be real active on the list in the near future .. I'll be around and will make a few posts.
