Guest guest
Hi Vickie, Even scarier is that some tests showed that it took as little as 90 days of taking Vioxx to cause these health risks Here is a good post about how long it takes for a new drug to be approved in the US .. http://www.madsci.org/posts/archives/feb2000/950500674.Me.r.html Yes, it is scary how powerful the pharmaceutical industry is. That is why medical costs are so high, and that is why there is no valid treatment for cancer aside from chemotherapy, and the list goes on. I am very much in favor of capitalism but I also firmly believe that the " practice of medicine " and preparation of medicines should have way back when been forced to be a not for profit field! And there is NO WAY that drug companies should be allowed to advertise their prescription drugs on TV and in magazines In the end it has become little to do with really helping people and more about who can make the biggest buck, and when it comes to an industry that is supposed to be about protecting and improving people's lives and health that is unacceptable IMHO. *Smile* Chris (list mom) Last Day For The Sale On Tins and Foamer Bottles Last Day for The Pre-Buy On Silver Perfume Pendants Last Days For The Great Pumpkin 2 Auction Basket!!!! http://www.alittleolfactory.com Vicki Younger [vicki] <snipped> Does anyone know how long clinical trials are conducted before releasing new drugs onto the market? If the drug was released in 1999, it makes no sense that this data is only now being released. Eighteen months isn't a long time for problems to be appearing, so if the drug was released prior to those results being known surely it means our regulatory agencies are failing us doesn't it? Yet another fine example of the enormous clout the drug companies must have in rushing a drug onto the market. Guest guest
Thanks for the website, its is very informational. It confirms some of the things I remembered from graduate school. There is a lot of " rubber stamping " that goes on with the FDA. Not that they don't try, but there are not enough people to do all the work that is required. Its that thing called " cut backs " . Everything is effected when we lower taxes and make cut backs. The FDA does take what the drug/food company's word for a lot of things. I agree with you Christine, the drug company's shouldn't advertise on TV. I saw somewhere that it has really increased their sales -- people go and ask their doc for the drug and he/she gives it to them. Trust me I could go on for a while on this one but won't. We DO however have one of the very best medical systems in the world. With LOTS of new and innovative treatments coming out all the time. Ask our friend to the north. If they have the funds they come south for treatment. It is also the most expensive system in the world and it doesn't look like it will get any better. I am self covered and live in Colorado. I moved from the front range (near Denver) to the mountains and my insurance increased $15 a month -- still don't know why. I moved to a healthier place and still haven't use it, but it went up. Another interesting tid bit about CO. There was something on the news the other day about not covering any preventive medical treatments, this is to include mammograms and prostate exams. The doc that was telling about this was saying how these 2 procedures alone save hundreds of lives yearly and if we eliminate " preventive " care we might just as well let people die (its much cheaper for the insurance company's that way) OK I'll get off my soap box Rita Christine Ziegler <chrisziggy wrote: Hi Vickie, Even scarier is that some tests showed that it took as little as 90 days of taking Vioxx to cause these health risks Here is a good post about how long it takes for a new drug to be approved in the US .. http://www.madsci.org/posts/archives/feb2000/950500674.Me.r.html Yes, it is scary how powerful the pharmaceutical industry is.
