Guest guest
morning all, around here, horse apples are called hedge balls. they aren't really an apple but a seed pod from the hedge trees. they are a large, dimply green ball. they stay very hard until the first hard frost and then they will break down. when broke apart, they appear much like an un-ripe cat-tail top. there is a small core in the middle with fiberous things coming out from the center to the outer skin. they are strangely attractive and some people collect them from the fields and place them in bowls for fall decorations. we use to put them in the corners of the garages for spiders. they will last forever if not exposed to the hard frost. was looking for a pic and came up with this site so that you could see. http://calstaging.bemidjistate.edu/students/jhatch/howto.html i know the article says that you can get them at the grocery stores but i've never come across any there. some fall farmer's markets have them, usually a vender with dried wild flowers. sometimes with the pumpkins for sale. you just have to look. deb c chillicothe, mo
Guest guest
If anyone is near Dandridge TN my father is out there and he usually has TONS of these on his property. If my SIL hasn't already grabbed 'em you could pick some up from him. They do look gorgeous in a bowl for decorating purposes and they do work to keep critters at bay - Dad uses some to keep critters from coming in from the cold as autumn descends.
