Guest guest
We are the newest homeschoolers in the US of A! I wanted to thank all of you for responding. DD is the newest homeschooler!!! It wasn't just the school per se. It was CT's education system in general. It is in sad shape. Don't mean to be an alarmist but when the local paper printed the high school's SAT scores - they hadn't changed in four years - it became the final piece of the picture to us. Their scores aren't great and they're not awful. They just are. No change in the last four years??? I'm not going to waste my time digging back even further for scores. They cannot possibly continue to ignore that what they're doing cannot remain status quo. These kids have stale teachers in front of them. And they're stale because the state mandates what they should teach and how they should teach it. Very sad. DS will continue in public school until I'm sure I have my days and my younger daughter's learning in hand enough to add a new learning style. I have to say the unschooling part doesn't even seem to be difficult (yet) so disenchanted was DD with her particular grade work. DS is a doll. He sits and listens in on his sister's time with me and chimes in easily. I wanted to repeat my thanks to Cathy and others who advised me to clear the air with the school first. We did and we really meant it...weren't just blowing smoke as they say. DD's teacher appears to be genuinely happy with our decision and actually offered to help me obtain some state materials and support as well as making herself available to me if I have any questions about any lesson I'd like to teach my daughter. I don't think I've ever been happier. Thank you again each of you. Who knows if I would have made the same decision if I hadn't had other people willing to speak up and offer guidance and well wishes?
