Guest guest
Mercurius, I have used a pendulum for many things, including pregnancy, and it seemed to always know... recently, when my wife and i found out we were going to have a child, we pulled out old faithful and it turned out to not be so accurate after all... just a warning, and im sure you know but, dont always trust the pendulum like i once did! Guest guest
Hi Laura. This is probably the most fun, and interesting part of pre heaven dynamics in TCM. My experience is that halfway into the pregnancy, 24 wks, if the right side pulse is more energetic, then a boy is indicated. You have to feel all the levels and compare simultaneously, holding the positions on each wrist, going level to level, top to bottom (san jiao). Also, there are things mother and father can do to influence gender, and to protect and make strong the being, month by month. There is tons of material out there I guess, tho I haven't found much. My left side is much stronger than my right side, which I think would indicate a boy, right? I've heard that it is supposedly not accurate until the 20th week, but has anyone else noticed if it can be determined sooner? And how accurate do you find it to be? I'd be happy with either gender, but I am curious! Thanks! Laura

Guest guest
According to modern pulse master, Leon Hammer (author of Chinese Pulse Diagnosis, A Contemporary Approach) - its a boy if the left proximal position is very tight and a girl if the right proximal position is very tight (from Van Buren). Hammer, after decades of experience, declares this to be 90% accurate. I have had three goes at this since learning it and am batting 1000. Guest guest
Just right after my wife and I found out about her pregnancy using a pregnancy test, I took her pulse. Overall, her pulse was stronger on her left side than her right side. What I thought was the clintcher was that her left kidney pulse was definitely stronger than her right. So, I concluded that she was pregnant with a boy. Subsequent visits to OB/GYN and ultrasound confirmed that. Max is now 2 and a half years old. Congratulations!! --- On Fri, 7/31/09, heylaurag <heylaurag wrote: heylaurag <heylaurag Gender/pregnancy Chinese Medicine Friday, July 31, 2009, 9:19 AM Hi, I was wondering if anyone has experience with how accurate and how soon the pulses are in determining gender? Guest guest
Yes, that fits what I've heard too. My left proximal pulse is definitely very tight which is very unusual for me. Do you know if Leon Hammer said you could determine the gender early in the pregnancy? I heard that it cannot be determined until 20 weeks but since my pulse is so distinct I am thinking maybe it means something. Thanks for all the ideas and responses! Guest guest
Hi. Please keep us informed (and any other mother) how the pulse and gender of the child works out. We are in a modern connected society, so we can readily work out left/right, surging/ spreading pulses. We have the ability to test out so many CM theories. Yea! --- On Fri, 7/31/09, heylaurag <heylaurag wrote: heylaurag <heylaurag Re: Gender/pregnancy Chinese Medicine Friday, July 31, 2009, 11:30 PM Yes, that fits what I've heard too. Guest guest
Hi, Congratulations on the pregnancy :0) My experience here is limited. However I find that the determinaton of gender according to the pulse to be very close to 100% correct if it is conducted after a treatment where pulses have been well-balanced leaving the left Chi position tending towards being relatively fuller (a stony quality) in both deep and shallow positions(without the hardness of an excess pulse) than the right Chi indicates a boy and the opposite indicates a girl. Either way the same pulse indicates a healthy pregnancy. I generally find that genders are most accurately determined after the first trimester..... Before realizing that determining genders is most accurate after treament due to the better relative balance of the meridians reflected in the pulses I made a mistake that I will not soon forget.. I was once asked by a woman at a social gathering to determine the gender of her unborn child. I determined it to be a girl but it turned out to be a boy. What the pulse was really reflecting was an undiagnosed pregnancy diabetes. Have a great pregnancy :0) Thomas
Guest guest
There is no mention in Hammer's encyclopaedic pulse book on this matter (when in pregnancy the test is valid) - but I know one of his senior students so I will ask and get back to you on that. But its interesting what you have already observed. Daniel Chinese Medicine , " heylaurag " <heylaurag wrote: > > Yes, that fits what I've heard too. Guest guest
Laura, I am one of those acupuncurists that disagrees with Yellow Emperor and feels that the right side is more masculine and the left feminine. I have found the easiest way isn't through strength of the pulse as it is through communication with the baby and as sex is determined fairly early, there is no reason to think that you should not be able to get a feel for it. The way i have done it as a practitioner is to take the pulse with one hand and touch the umbillicus with the other, asking " are you a boy? " (feeling the right side and of course, " are you a girl? " feeling the left) the mother then keeps her concentration on the child without expectation, the reaction of the child and the pulse is often very dramatic. How you would do this for yourself, i'm not sure, but perhaps you have a friend who is an LAc.? Also, the whole out to the side or out front belly is a pretty good indicator as well. Have had mixed results with the pendulum, though some pracs swear by it. Best of health to you!
