It is not impossible, even if difficoult, of course, an RCT with BOTH of the diagnoses, chinese and western. In 2003 I discussed this possibility with a chinese MD (Orental AND Western medicine) working for the Chinese Health Ministery and Cochrane db. In the random choice patients must be selected (with two comitees) both in the two view of diagnosis. Of course, less than a 20% will be accepted, but in case of pharmacological (herbal) treatment, clinical results will be collected in the two methods. Different is the acu-way: sham acupuncture is so " sham " ? Cochrane db, recently published a study on true vs sham acup. But is unacceptable that an acupoint " sham " is only five milimeters far from the " true " one.
