Hi John,

 

Sometimes the publication date of a text is different from the exact date in

which it was actually written. Perhaps a student or grandstudent of Li Gao's

published the book after he died.

 

My sources say that the book was written sometime in the Jin (金) Dynasty and

published around 1276 (Yuan Dynasty). The name of the book refers to the idea

that the formulas contained within are of precious value.

The term " orchid chamber " is an abbreviation of the metaphor borrowed from

another text titled ç´ é—®çµå…°ç§˜å…¸è®º. The metaphor is " chamber storing the

divine orchid " (è—çµå…°ä¹‹å®¤) and, when used in the title " Secrets of the

Orchid Chamber " , refers to a treasurehouse of precious formulas.
