Guest guest
Can anyone clarify about 1. the reason that " Secrets from the Orchid Chamber " " Lan2 shi4 mi4 cang2 " attributed to Li Gao/ Li Dong-Yuan was published in 1335/1336, while Li Dong-Yuan lived from 1179-1250? Was this a post-humorously published work? or is there a mistake in the Introduction charts from the new Formulas and Strategies 2nd edition (introduction time line charts)...? Also, what significance does the title of the book have? Thanks. Guest guest
According to the Si4 ku4 quan2 shu1 zong3 mu4 ti2 yao4 ËÄ¿âÈ«Êé×ÜÄ¿ÌáÒª, the Lan2 shi4 mi4 cang2 À¼ÊÒÃØ²Ø Secret Treasure of the Orchid Chamber was published in 1276, 25 years after Li3 Gao3's death. His disciple Luo2 Tian1£Yi4 ÂÞÌìÒæ is thought to have contributed to its completion and publication. The Si4 ku4 quan2 shu1 asserts that the name Lan2 shi4 mi4 cang2 is a reference to Su4 wen4 . Ling2 lan2 mi4 dian3 lun2 pian1 di4 ba1 ËØÎÊ. ÁéÀ¼ÃصäÂÛƪµÚ°Ë, translated by Wiseman & Ye as Plain Questions 8, Treatise of the Arcane Book of the Orchid Chamber of the Spirit Tower, or which can be broken down into Simple Question, Divine Orchid Secret Canon Treatise Chapter 8. Therein Qi Bo describes the functions and relationships of the organs. The Yellow Emperor remarks on the high value of the information, ending with the phrase cang2 ling2 lan2 zhi1 shi4 ...²ØÁéÀ¼Ö®ÊÒ... suggesting treasured material to be stored away in the Divine Orchid Chamber for future generations to carefully consider in their search for knowledge. What does the Orchid Chamber refer to? Professor Qu1 Li2-Min3 ÇúÀèÃô writes about the significance of the Su wen chapter heading ÁéÀ¼ÃصäÂÛ in her book »ÆµÛÄÚ¾¶ ÑøÉúÖÇ»Û. Here's my very rough translation, with my notes in brackets: Within the Ling2 lan2 mi4 dian3 lun2 ÁéÀ¼ÃصäÂÛ, the two characters ling2 lan2“ÁéÀ¼”are an abbreviation for ling2 tai2 lan2 shi4 Áę́À¼ÊÒ . Ling2 tai2 Áę́ is the Confucian School's metaphor or alternate name for heart or mind (xin1 ÐÄ). Lan2 shi4 À¼ÊÒ is a refined name for a person of noble character's place of dwelling. Within the Sayings of the Confucian School ¿××Ó¼ÒÕZ it is stated, " [in a noble person's residence], entering a room of irises and orchids [this room being a metaphor for associating with learned and well-charactered people], over time one is unaware of their fragrance, because [one is] changed by them [as if to become them by transformation]“. Áę́À¼ÊÒ then indicates an unadorned and genuine substantial truth. Within this chapter the author wants to use a type of most unadorned and unembellished manner of narration to tell everyone the essential content of . So the Orchid Chamber could be read as a good and noble place of study within the heart. Guest guest
Charlie, Thanks for the thorough response.
