Guest guest
Greetings all - Would appreciate opinions and also any references you may know regarding prescribing herbs for a patient who has had breast cancer twice; in remission for 5 years now; still taking Tamoxifan. I have read that any herbs that are 'estrogenic' should not be given. However, this patient is blood and qi deficient and could benefit from herbs, yet I hesitate. Thanks. Guest guest
Hi Nancy: Always prescribe according to presenting signs and symptoms. Be aware of possible drug interactions, rate level of danger and prescribe conservatively if you feel the need. If you do a search for Isaac Cohen, Breast cancer and Traditional Chinese Medicine, you should come up with a lengthy overview regarding this topic. In related news, I just had a meeting today with a " Clinical Research Specialist " (designs studies) at a hospital here in Toronto. She is developing a proposal initiated by an oncologist who asked " what measures can be suggested for promoting health and reducing the risk of recurrence in patients who have completed conventional treatments for (breast) cancer? " This question stemmed from the obvious lack of care following cancer treatment, but mainly from the constant questions put forth by patients as well as their very high interest in " alternative medicines " . This grassroots interest in our medicine is another source of potential power, along with money and lawyers , but we need to tap into it effectively. This lady was very interested in the implications of the study I reference in my blog (http://tinyurl.com/qt6khk), and we both feel that there are huge data sets in modern healthcare that are simply ignored. These datasets involve quality, human relationships, implication or meaning, and long-term outcomes. She is very interested in the implications or meaning of the fear associated with cancer, for example in the behaviour advocated by current best practices which is to screen as early as possible and as often as possible for changes in the breast. Thanks, Hugo ________________________________ Hugo Ramiro http://middlemedicine.wordpress.com http://www.chinesemedicaltherapies.org ________________________________ Nancy Corsaro <eastwestacup Chinese Medicine Friday, 26 June, 2009 9:38:01 Post-breast cancer herbs Greetings all - Would appreciate opinions and also any references you may know regarding prescribing herbs for a patient who has had breast cancer twice; in remission for 5 years now; still taking Tamoxifan.
