Guest guest
Hi Ruth, My mother suffered from this disease several years ago. She was completely paralyzed and on a respirator. She was 63 years old at the time. She has made a near complete recovery. She only has slight numbness is her fingers and toes. From what I've gathered it seems younger people who get this syndrome suffer more longterm damage to their nervous system. I was able to treat my mother is the subacute phase with acupuncture. I concentrated on taiyang (back shu pts) and yangming channels. In terms of herbs it's best to treat according to the pattern, of course. Guillane Barre falls into the category of a Wei syndrome and usually there is kid or liv yin def. Subbhuti has a published report regarding Guillane Barre. Good luck. >ruth elder <ruthelder > > > Guillian-Barre >6 Jul 2001 20:39:22 -0700 > >Any of you ever treat spasms, burning pain, numbness, tingling, tightness, >pressure sensation associated with this disease? Guest guest
The symptoms you listed are not consistant with Gillian-Barre. Ascending paralysis is the main feature of the condition. Also the onset with vaccine associated GB is rather rapid, shortly after the vaccine is given. Its a contrindication for recieving flu vaccines. Perhaps a second opinion would be advisible? GB can also follow viral and bacterial infections. >ruth elder <ruthelder > > > Guillian-Barre >6 Jul 2001 20:39:22 -0700 > >Any of you ever treat spasms, burning pain, numbness, tingling, tightness, >pressure sensation associated with this disease? Guest guest
I recently treated a diagnosed Gillian - Barre or better put as a febrile or infectious polyneuritus in western terms. Although ascendent paralysis May Be a feature it by no means is consistant and the course of the disease is variable. The beauty of TCM is that the disease was readily recognized as a Wei Syndrome with Qi def and Blood Stasis obstructing. It may spread upward if the liver and kidneys are deficient. He complained of numbness, tingling, spasms in the legs and fatigue. I have been using Bu Yang Huan Wu Tang with additions of Shu Di, Dan Shen, Wei Ling Xian, etc. with considerable success. Yan De - Xin recommends Zi Wan and Sheng Ma additions. This elderly gentleman has reported that he is indeeed starting to feel his feet and circulation and energy has improved. The disease in western terms can be viral or immunization ( 1- 3 weeks showing after) with symmetric pain and weakness of the extremities and paralysis. It may spread to the upper limbs but it is variable as to severity and can resolve itself in some cases. It is indeed a problem in Western mind set to get a handle on this but for TCM it's a Wei Syndrome. > " Jenny Herritt " <jennyherrittrn > >The symptoms you listed are not consistant with Gillian-Barre. Guest guest
Hi Angela, I have treated one person with GB quite successfully. I started seeing her about 2 months after the initial diagnosis, at the time she was still in a long term care facility. She was experiencing a lot of nerve pain especially in her feet, toes, and hands and was having a very difficult time walking around even with any help . She was also getting depressed and had a scheduled vacation scheduled in the next 8 weeks in which she would be traveling (walking tours) all around Italy and desperatly wanted to go. I did no herbs with her. Actually, mostly what I did was scalp acupuncture twice a week on her leg motor and sensory area, and upper limb and lower limb area. She could not sit up, so I could not do any back points. I believe the only other points besides scalp were Liver 3 dispersed and Kidney 3, Spleen 3, 6 Stomach 36, and CV 4, 12 tonified. Oh and I did some auricular points that were tender on areas that corresponded to her fingers and toes. Within 6 weeks she was able to go home, mostly pain free, and at 8 weeks was able to go on her vacation, although she moved a bit slower she was able to do everything she wanted to and see everything she wanted to in Italy. I do not even think she used the cane, although she did take it with her just in case. This was 2 years ago and I continue to see her as a patient today, now just because she loves treatment. The only residual side effect is sometimes some tingling in her toes, which comes and goes and doesn't last very long. I hope this is helpful. Another thought I had may be to use some of Dr. Tan's techniques (123-balance method mirroring pain/numbness/tingling) which may add some immediate relief.
