" ------------- Hi Dr. Mello, Variations of this question have been looked at since Dr. Denise Faustman at Harvard University discovered a relationship that you are suggesting. Try a PumMed Central search for this: diabetes mellitus and spleen function Lots of good information. There's one article about lower nitric oxide synthase that implies a predisposition to Metabolic Syndrome. Another paper that gives the kind of science going on is this one: http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?artid=1904318 & tool=pmcentrez Dr. Denise Faustman ( http://www.faustmanlab.org/ ) did the research at Harvard University that showed other mammalian species have pancreatic islet stem cells in their spleens. She theorized that humans might also have pancreatic islet stem cells in their spleens. It's possible that pluripotent stem cells else where in the abdominal cavity can take over for those lost when the spleen is lost. As I see, the Spleen in chinese medicin should also include Pancreas. So if you remove the spleen it is not the same as loosing all functions of the Spleen as seen in chinese medicine. Even if the Spleen network is involved in diabetes even in chinese medicine, this may be of the involvment of the pancreas as well, so a removal of the spleen does not nescessarily giv diabetes. Even removal of the spleen may not impair the functions of the Spleen as seen in chinese medicine at all, but surely give you a tendancy to damage the functions of the Spleen in the long run. The Spleen in chinese medicine is surely involved in the digestion, but not only digestion of food, but also " digestion " of thoughts, I am not sure that persons that remove a spleen get stuck in their thinking (because they lose the transformation and transportation functions), and I am not sure they loose their ability to transform and transport food just of a removal of the spleen. but I would be very curious to know what happens with persons that get an organ removed, both fysically and psychological. This is something that I do not think western medicine considder. my 5 cents /Peter
