Hi All,

Controversy exists in most areas of biological research. Different workers /

researchers in the same field often reach different conclusions - remember the

old story of the Three Blind Men and the Sleeping Elephanat?

In TCM Theory, KI Governs Bone and Marrow (bone marrow, spinal cord and brain).

Therefore, points like Shenshu-BL23 and BL11-Dazhu [influential Point for Bone]

would be expected to help bone problems.

Paper 1 confirmed that for BL23-Shenshu:

Zhang X, Peng Y, Yu J, Liu C, Cheng H, Liu L, Han J. Changes in

Histomorphometric and Mechanical Properties of Femurs Induced by Acupuncture at

the Shenshu Point in the SAMP6 Mouse Model of Senile Osteoporosis. Gerontology.

2009 Apr 23. [Epub ahead of print]. Department of Biochemical Engineering,

School of Chemical Engineering Technology, Tianjin University, Tianjin, China.

Background/Objective: The effect of acupuncture on the changes in the

histomorphometric and mechanical properties of femurs in senescence-accelerated

mice strain P6 (SAMP6) was evaluated in this work. Methods: Six-month-old male

SAMP6 and SAMR1 mice were allocated to 1 of 4 groups: SAMP6 control group (Pc),

SAMP6 non-acupoint control group (Pn), SAMP6 acupuncture group (Pa) and SAMR1

control group (Rc). The Pa group was acupunctured at the Shenshu point (BL23)

once daily for 8 weeks. Two non-acupoints at the hypochondria were needled for

the Pn group. Mice in the other 2 groups were grasped using the same method as

for the Pa group. The serum testosterone and osteocalcin (OC) levels were

determined by radioimmunoassay. The histomorphometric data were obtained from

undecalcified specimens, and the mechanical properties of the femur were

assessed by the 3-point bending test. Results: After acupuncture treatment, the

decreased serum testosterone level in SAMP6 mice increased markedly, whereas the

increased OC concentration declined sharply. The bone histomorphometric and

mechanical indexes of SAMP6 mice also improved significantly. The values of

trabecular thickness, trabecular bone volume, osteoid volume, mineral apposition

rate and bone formation rate in Pa mice increased by 20.4, 18.1, 14.1, 9.9 and

14.7%, respectively, compared with Pc mice. The scores for ultimate force, yield

force, elastic stress, ultimate stress and energy to yield force for Pa mice

were significantly higher than those of Pc and Pn mice. Conclusion: Therefore,

acupuncture at BL23 was effective in promoting bone formation, restoring the

amount of bone volume, improving bone architecture and reversing osteoporosis in

SAMP6 mice to some degree by enhancing the secretion of testosterone and

declining bone turnover. Copyright © 2009 S. Karger AG, Basel.

This basically agrees [in theory]:

of acupuncture treatment based on TCM theory about brain. J Tradit Chin Med.

2005 Jun;25(2):108-13. Tianjin College of Traditional , Tianjin

300193, China. The brain is the sea of marrow, stores the cerebral spirit and

dominates all the life activities of the human body, which are the basic TCM

knowledge about the brain. Based on this knowledge, the pathogenesis of

climacteric syndrome is considered as consumption and deficiency of

kidney-essence, and incoordination between the brain and kidney. The principle

of acupuncture treatment should be soothing the mind and tonifying the kidney.

Am J Chin Med. 2005;33(2):299-306. School of Health Sciences, Victoria

University Melbourne City, Vic 8001, Australia. hong.xu Osteoporosis

is a worldwide problem that is increasing significantly as the global population

both increases and ages. While osteoporosis has been extensively studied in

recent years, the utilization of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for the

diagnosis, prevention and treatment of this condition has seldom been examined.

This paper examines the theories and the literature that relate to diagnosis,

prevention and treatment of bone loss at the time of menopause according to the

principles of TCM. It also considers practical developments in these areas as

illustrated by the authors' research findings in recent studies. TCM diagnosis

attributes a number of different underlying patterns to menopausal bone loss. A

very common pattern in this situation is a Kidney qi and yin deficiency pattern.

TCM analysis can be used as an early determinant of those persons who are

potentially at risk of bone loss. Acupuncture, herbal medicine and Tai Ji

exercise can then be applied to prevent and treat osteoporosis. These treatments

can be effective, if they are applied correctly. The therapies may also be used

in the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis, as well as the general

maintenance of women's health during menopause. PMID: 15974488 [PubMed - indexed

However, the following paper says Jiaji points are better than KI / SP points for

loin pain / sciatica due to osteoporosis:

acupoint-injection for treatment of lumbago-leg pain induced by primary

osteoporosis] [Article in Chinese]. Zhongguo Zhen Jiu. 2008 Apr;28(4):261-4.

Postgraduate Class of Hubei College of TCM, Wuhan 430061, China.

fayewong_520 OBJECTIVE: To compare therapeutic effects of

acupoint-injection and Chinese herbs for treatment of lumbago-leg pain induced

by primary osteoporosis. METHODS: Ninety cases of lumbago-leg pain induced by

primary osteoporosis were randomly divided into a Jiaji point group, a

reinforcing kidney and strengthening spleen point group and a medication group,

30 cases in each group. For the Jiaji point group, bilateral Jiaji points T11,

L1, L3, L5 and S2 were selected; for the reinforcing kidney and strengthening

spleen point group, Pishu (BL 20), Shenshu (BL 23), Taixi (KI 3), Taibai (SP 3),

Taichong (LR 3), Sanyinjiao (SP 6), Xuehai (SP 10) were selected and the

medication group were treated with oral administration of Qianggu Capsules.

Changes of bone mass density (BMD) and pain cumulative score after treatment

were observed. RESULTS: The total effective rate was 93.3% in the Jiaji point

group, 73.3% in the reinforcing kidney and strengthening spleen point group and

60.0% in the medication group, the Jiaji point group being better than both the

reinforcing kidney and strengthening spleen point group and the medication group

(P<0.01, P<0.05). In reduction of pain cumulative score and improvement of BMD,

the Jiaji point group was better than both the reinforcing kidney and

strengthening spleen point group and the medication group (P<0.01), and the

reinforcing kidney and strengthening spleen point group was better than the

medication group (P<0.05, P<0.01). CONCLUSION: Acupoint-injection has a definite

therapeutic effect on lumbago-leg pain induced by primary osteoporosis, and the

therapeutic effect of the Jiaji point group is better than the reinforcing

kidney and strengthening spleen point group. PMID: 18481716 [PubMed - indexed

Hi Phil! I hope this is at least entertaining. Within anatomical orbits, and

cycles of generation, in the beginning of the life is the coming together of the

seeds. The seeds come from the totality of the ancestors' experience. And more

directly, most recently, filtered, collected and protected, and.. finally

delivered by the energetic area assigned to the (storehouse) kidney. That

potential (yuan)developing (kidney), had recieved the best from the organism

(mind and organ systems)and in the new environment( uterus, extraordinary

organ), is releasing realizing itself as best it can, along the extraordinary

channels. Making left/right, back/front, head/tail, and all the minute delicate

refinements of that spaciality and organistic interdependance and integrity.

Head to tail is the most important beacause it is the link to the clear yang,

the system that incorporates all the kidney reproductive and developmental

power, up along the beautiful spine

and its energetic bundles to the mind and senses and perception and self

perception, making a complete unity, to encounter larger unity.

The 'governing' power of kidney is so subtle and real at that genetic (pre

heaven), geometric, yin/yang time. Aside from or in absence of an unfortunate

maternal environment ( relative health of all organ systems-liver- lung-blood

etc,, ok nutrition, sanitation, and freedom from physical and emotional trauma,

and general prolonged stress), it will form normally. Month by month there are

cautions of what a mother should avoid, to prevent psychic and physical harm

being transferred to the growing seed(s).

Eventually tian kwei kicks in too, and if it doesn't or doesn't quite, why have

a place to start looking why. But that's ahead, teen time.

The kidney energy of the about to be born, and newborn, is manifesting the

preheaven. The post heaven (kidney) is still like; look at a little mulberry

bush (or apricot tree, doesn't matter). We see the little thing getting hold,

but the berries that contain the seed haven't formed yet, and won't for years,

but they are still there deep in the being, it's there.

When stress occurs in a normal human, not exciting fun stress, but the negative

kind, tension occurs, blood vessels ciculation contracts, breathing is less

natural or optimum, and the lack of percieved freedom or even joy, create the

internal stagnations that day to day become bad choices, low expectations, and a

self fulfilling self originated skewed worldview.

Degradation and disease follow. Growth decline growth decline.

Almost in opposition to many negative stimulii, the (yi) intended and followed

breaths (post heaven) can augment and even comandeer errant (obits and

generating cycles of) qi. Refreshing the organism, healing it, and even

potentially changing the ancestral path to the better a bit. Every child and

person deserves to feel life is beautiful and open to whatever they want, like a

walk on a spring day. Otherwise, things clump where they shouldn't clump, dreams

die where they shouldn't, and over and underinflated egos grab where they should

touch.

A qi gung orbit for emitting qi through the hands, isn't the same of meditative

self healing visualizations orbits, but the mind-breath (post heaven qi) leads

it all, at least at first, and they all always touch, charge or tap back into

the kidney sphere, and usually mind, front-near sinus', or all brain, to a more

or less part of the focus. They just don't follow narrow channels, it sorrounds

things in a flowing way.

That is why I said, in a little way, breath governs bone. The mind-breath is

the interface. The nice way some of you described Yi, made me think small

changes can influence this and our descendants' lives.

Just a couple thoughts, (people talk like birds walk). The classic intro into

organ function and qi generation is the path of a good grounded cm education,

which is a good foundation of world medicine. When the heart is serene, pain is

negligible.
