Does anyone have any suggestions for proper draping of a patient who is lying on

his side for acup treatment of pain in the sciatic distribution? I need to get

to his buttock, low back and down leg. It's hard to describe what I've been

doing and it's not working that well.

Thanks, Marian

Hi. I don't know if this helps, but it sounds like an important tho basic

question. Maybe I am not reading your question deeply enough. When I am ready to

treat someone new, I tell them, 'I will need such and such areas exposed for

treatment, this is a medical procedure' , etc. I leave sheets and towels, and

come back and knock on the door when they've had time to prepare, to ask if they

are ready. I am a man, and if am treating a woman, I prefer to have another

female in the room for their comfort, whether a friend of the patient, an

apprentice or even a receptionist, when I feel the situation warrants that much

concern.

During treatment, I cover them as we move, to my comfort level, so there is no

chance of impropriety, or distraction. For a woman practitioner, I tell them to

take charge, also cover and drape. Male and female practitioners have similar

but sometimes different issues come up. A male patient may come on to a female

practitioner, and a female patient may feel threatened by their vulnerability.

The opposite also happens.

So make light of it, brush things off gently if possible, reassure. Move on

with the treatment.

Experience as a massage therapist is helpful.

Try this: Tell patient to disrobe and hang a long-folded sheet over the

involved-side-shoulder down the front of their body. As they lie down on the

opposite side pull the long end through their legs and loop back to cover the

non-involved side of the back. Works for men and women and allows total hip

range.

Also, I encourage looking at the *person*. If they either get a charge out of

their nakedness, or alternatively are quick to embarrassed modesty, should not

be your concern. Remember what you are there for, and maturity and acceptance

go a long way to diffuse these situations.
