Women get strokes on L side, Men on R?

a patient i'm treating told me today that at the PT facility they attended

they noticed that women get strokes affecting their L side, and men on the

R. This was do to the fact that women have a tendency to be more R brained

and men more L dominate.

 

i thought this had interesting TCM implications, considering that the L side

is yin and R is yang.

 

can anyone confirm or elaborate on this phenomena?

I am a Zen Shiatsu practitioner and work with about 70 seniors every week at 2

senior centers. About 40% have suffered strokes and have some disability. There

is a fairly even distribution between men and woman. I have not witnessed any

clear lines between left and right side determined by sex. What I have witnessed

is a difference in response to my treatment that is culturally based. The

seniors at the Vietnamese center where I work have shown visible improvement in

movement, sometimes dramatically. I don't know what to attribute this to other

than possibly an openess to this type of treatment.

I have treated strokes in men and women for over 10 years and I can't say that I

have seen a predominance on either side for males and females.  The left side of

the brain, in general, controls linear, logical processes like math, science,

eng etc while the right side of the brain is involved in more of the creative,

intuitive, holistic aspects of life.  You could just as easily say women have

strokes on the left side because they either have made more use of the right

emotional aspects or because they don't use the left logical as often as men. 

But no matter which side you choose there are far too many other explanations.

Left side is yang and Right side is yin.

 

Left side affected is said to be more of a deficiency

and Right side affected is said to more of an excess...

 

Instead of right brain and left brain for the sexes,

I think that men are said to be less syncretic,

while women think more globally (across the corpus collosum)...

better at multi-tasking etc.
