Hello,

I'm interested in going to China to do an internship with a practitioner, or

at a clinic or hospital. I have looked online and it seems a maze of

information about different programs of study. I'm looking to go for around 3

months, and am interested in learning some Tuina and Acupuncture, as well as

increase my herbal proficiency. I would like to go in March sometime, that is

why I'm not doing a study abroad program with my school, they go in October. If

anyone has done an intership in China or has any suggestions I would really

appreciate your input. Thanks! Mandy

Mandy, I think you deserve an reply here.China is equivalent to Mecca

when it comes to intership for CM, just like potential sushi chef

should learn making sushi in Japan.

First, ask those who been there. PCOM and many other institutes send

their students there every year. They all tell you it is fascinating

and want to go back again if they have the time. All major tcm

universities have affiliated hosptial(s) that they have all sort of

specialty that u can observe and rotate one by one. Big cities like

Shanghai, beijing, guangzhou are fun and fascinating. Disco, scenery

spots, tourist attractions, taichi class, qigong class, cultural

events will keep you busy day and night. Bring a lonely planet book

with you and in no time, 3 months are gone.

Or you can learn the hard way. Stick to one mentor, learn all his/her

specialty, study hard to memorize all his/her prescriptions, observe

results and focus only upon specific (provided his/she is willing to

train you). Stay in the herbal shop day and night, no fun, no

afternoon tea, no comfortable life, running errands and you probably

will be a capable pratitioner in a few years. It ususally takes 3

years and you will work like slaves and it is called apprenticeship.

Once you survive, you have equivalent experiences of a most sought-

after practitioner (only if you find the right mentor).

Thank you for the response, Yuk-ming Sung. I am still researching, and it is

still quite a lot to sift through. If anyone has any personal suggestions from

visiting there, I would be grateful. Thanks, Mandy

Hi Amanda,

A question like the one you're asking has come up a couple of times already.

I think you may find some useful tips if you search the archives of this

forum.

Best,

Tom.
