Dear Colleagues,

With regarding to 635nm (<5mW Class IIIA laser) acupuncture laser please

clarify the following points if you have any experience :

1. Exposure time of this laser on acupuncture points ?

2. Exposure distance of this laser from acupuncture points ?

3. Is it necessary to wear special glasses while working with this

laser ?

Best regards,

  Hi. I believe the accepted standards of laser acupuncture therapy are;

..time: apx a)15 to 30 seconds, or b)15 to 60 seconds, or c)up to 3

minutes of exposure per  point.  Following the methodology of

traditional needle manipulation, sequence the point selection for

overall tonify by moving from point to point along meridian flow path,

eg st>spl>ht>si>bl>kd>>p>sj> etc., lingering

a little longer on the points for reducing and relatively less seconds

on the points for tonify. For overall reduce move backwards through

channel flow in point selection, and individual point exposure for

tonify/reduce (deficient/excess) remains the same.

..distance: red apx. 650nm @4-5mw can be put on the skin or very close to it.

..eyewear: always be careful and avoid exposure to the eyes with any

laser. Have the patient close their eyes when working near or on the

face. I don't know of any regulations requiring use of protective

eyewear for laser acupuncture therapy.

See Magaret Naeser's book and research

http://gancao.net/ht/laser.shtml  is good source of info regarding

considerations of continous and pulsed beam, and stroke and other

disease protocols. Some follow the electro-acupuncture pulse

frequency recommendations.

Patient sensitivity to acupuncture and laser and electro-acupuncture

varies, children and animals often being the most responsive.

 Hope this was helpful, Fran.
