Later the same day that I wrote this, I saw a patient who had been impotent post stroke, but had not infomed us of that. However several days after taking a formula for phlegm and blood stasis for the hemiplegia he reported, he began to wake with erections every morning. there were no yang tonics or any tonics in the formula, but it did include nan xing, an herb I rarely use, but which is quite powerful for breaking phlegm obstruction in the channels. He also reported increased motor control of his thumb, which he had not moved at all for several months. I can't remember the formula name, but it was a modification of the one for hemiplegia in sionneau, volume 7, under phlegm- heat. a week of surprises. Did your patient fall into any of these catagories or something similarly localized? Jim Ramholz
Guest guest
Hey all, 34 yr old male CC: inability to maintain erection started two years ago after an achilles injury (followed by surgery). he (so far!) has no other complaints, no morning diarrhea, no low back or knee pain, no digestive trouble or bitter taste in mouth. Works out 3-4x per week, so is physically fit. His doc mentioned that it may have had something to do with his surgery, but I am not sure why.. can this have anything to do with anesthesia??? He has a scar from surgery running along the lateral side of the achilles, starting at the calcaneal attachment and traveling for about 6 inches. Aside from soreness in the achilles with weather changes or when he does not exercise, he has no complaints. I am only seeing him for the 2nd time this thursday (23/10/2008) so hopefully i will get some more info out of him. any thoughts???? Even with lack of other signs, I am focusing on kidneys (UB 23, 52, Du 4, KD 3, UB 60) and scar therapy on the achilles. let me know what you think! thanks Caitlin
Guest guest
Tan has a theory of the connection between ankle and genitals. You could consider a Tan treatment. I would treat the scar, either with electric or moxa, and then also do the TCM treatment. Did you say he has no problem if he does not exercise? I would ask about the exercise regime and advise him to do less. This seems to be the odd aspect, if he is 34, it's hard to believe that his kid qi is that deficient. Is he looking wiped out, pale, etc. Maybe he masturbates a lot???? Tan says NOT to combine his treatments with TCM in the same session. Does anyone have experience with it, does it really diminish the Tan effect? Guest guest
Try Liv-1, Liv-5, Liv-8 and Liv-9 with strong e-stim between Liv-8 and Liv-9. The patient should feel the Qi into his groin. Also treat the Kidneys as you are doing. I've had good luck with this on my patients. Good luck! Christopher Vedeler L.Ac. Oasis Acupuncture http://www.oasisacupuncture.com 9832 N. Hayden Rd. Guest guest
I am guessing maybe the patient had a spinal anesthesia and it affected his dermatone --- On Wed, 10/22/08, Christopher Vedeler L.Ac. <vedeler wrote: Christopher Vedeler L.Ac. <vedeler RE: Impotence Chinese Medicine Wednesday, October 22, 2008, 9:51 PM Try Liv-1, Liv-5, Liv-8 and Liv-9 with strong e-stim between Liv-8 and Liv-9. Guest guest
Be sure to not just treat a single symptom. Look at the whole person, more likely stagnation....either from stress or channel from the surgery. impotence can also be related to anxiety, either his own performance or to please his partner. A couple of questions I usual ask is does he have a morning erection or is he able to get an erection on his own (nice way to ask about masterbation), an easy way to ask about over use is how many times a week do you orgasm. Of course other issues may be the cause as well. Look to all the pattern, treat that rather than the obvious " impotence equals qi def " Be well, Bob --- On Wed, 10/22/08, Angela Pfaffenberger, PH.D. <angelapfa wrote: Angela Pfaffenberger, PH.D. <angelapfa Re: Impotence Chinese Medicine Wednesday, October 22, 2008, 1:33 PM Tan has a theory of the connection between ankle and genitals. Guest guest
first.. thanks everyone for the ideas, i will keep them in mind for the next treatment second.. Angela, I wrote that his achilles does not bother him only when he DOES exercise, when he is without movement, it starts to hurt (stagnation) I didn't really think about doing tan method but it is a fantasic idea, I'll also try the liver points and see what happens! thanks again everybody! caitlin Chinese Medicine , " Angela Pfaffenberger, PH.D.
