hello all,

i am treating a 50 year old female who was in a serious car accident in? jan 05

(i started seeing her a couple weeks ago) for back and neck pain.? the pain is

pretty constant all the time except when she is laying down and is pretty

intense with sharp aches and spasms.? she has partial disc desiccation at all

level of cervical spine except c7/t1.? also a disc bulge at c2/3, and L 4/5 and

L5/s1.? she is on a variety of pain meds, does aqua therapy, and of course

acupuncture.? she says that acupuncture is the only thing that alleviates the

pain, and it lasts about 12 hours after treatment.? anyway, she has been to a

variety of doctors and has had some pretty bad experiences.? the last pain

management doctor she went to told her that he did not believe that she was in

any pain, and told her that she needed a psych consult.? she is fed up with the

doctors that she keeps getting referred to at her hospital and is hoping that i

can give her some names and numbers of a pain management doctor and a

neurosurgeon who would be more compassionate and open to alternative therapies

(the previous doctor also told her that acupuncture was crazy). she lives in

bowie maryland but is willing to travel as far as baltimore and washington DC if

she can find the right doctor who will take her seriously and be willing to

partner her in a more respectful and professional way.? does anyone have any

personal recommendations for her?? if so her and I would greatly appreciate it.?

thanks in advance.

Beth,

Are you within commute of any university medical center? You certainly should be

in your location. They would have a comprehensive pain center - and those docs

will be more ethical than to tell someone they're not really in pain.

Anesthiologists with comprehensive advanced training are the real pain

specialists among md's/do's. I'd call them and ask to speak to one of the dr's

about a referral you'd like to make. They will also have the best connections

for neurosurgeons.

Pain specialists are a different lot, and that is a high complement.

I am biased - I was a pt at University of Washington's Pain Center for chronic

pain before I received acupuncture. For a good while, I needed tx at both once I

started acupuncture. Those dr's will work with you well, in my experience.
